Healthy Eating After Gastric Banding Surgery

We have now successfully reached the end of the fourth week of our diet after gastric banding surgery, so we can continue to eat more or less the same type of food that you have been eating for the past four weeks, but this time the food is not it needs to be pureed, instead mashing it to the consistency of “baby food”. * Eat healthy solid food: Soft food slips easily and although this is good as it doesn’t block the stomach you will tend to eat more throughout the day. Choose solid foods without a lot of sauce (e.g. a small meal of chicken and vegetables) and you’ll eat less overall and stay fuller longer.

* Eat slowly and stop as soon as you feel full – Most obese people are used to rushing their meals and since there is a time lag between the stretching of the stomach wall and telling the brain that you are full, you need to stay careful with this one or you risk blockage, pain or vomiting. Take small bites and chew each piece 10-25 times.

* Don’t eat between meals – You shouldn’t need to eat between meals if you’re eating three reasonable meals a day.

* Don’t drink with meals – Liquids will speed up the passage of food through your stomach and spoil the beneficial effect of the slow emptying of food from your new stomach sac. If you drink something right before your meal you may also find that your stomach is still full and you cannot eat your meal. So avoid liquids half an hour before meals and for an hour after.

* All beverages should be zero-calorie – Because liquids pass so easily through the stomach, calorie-dense beverages, including alcohol, will simply add calories to your daily intake. Women need calcium, and you can get this from skim milk, but avoid juices, sodas (gas can also cause severe pain), zucchini and milkshakes.

For maximum weight loss after gastric banding surgery we suggest limiting the following foods:

* High-calorie beverages such as whole milk, milkshakes, alcohol, squeezed fruit, fruit juices

* Cakes, cookies and desserts

* Cereals with added sugar

* Fatty and greasy foods – butter, oils, snacks (chips, peanuts), crisps

* Creamy soups

You may be wondering if eating healthy after gastric banding surgery means that you will be required to take multivitamins, in general this is not necessary as your healthy diet should be adequate. If you still feel like you want it too, choose one that can be broken up into smaller pieces to swallow so it doesn’t get stuck in the gastric band.
