A Book Review: The Calcium Lie II – What Your Doctor Still Doesn’t Know
In 2008, the author published the first edition, The Calcium Lie – What Doctors Don’t Know Could be Killing You. Then, in 2013, we broke the news in The Calcium Lie – What Your Doctor Still Doesn’t Know. In this review we will look at the revised edition.
Dr. Robert Thompson, MD who maintains a medical practice in Alaska, had no idea what he was putting into this book. He, like most well-meaning health professionals, treated patients according to what he had learned in medical school over the years. Kathleen Barnes, health journalist and author, lives in North Carolina. Said Dr. Thompson says Kathleen helps him communicate in terms his readers will understand.
This reviewer has conducted many homeschool evaluations over the years that include a question in the General Information section of their materials: “What is the most important mineral for strong bones?” Many answered correctly, according to what they learned and according to the evaluation tool, “Calcium”.
The author wants us to remember that the test to determine if a patient has osteoporosis or its precursor, osteopenia, is the dexa MINERAL bone test. This name should help us remember that bones contain many minerals, including calcium. Just by supplementing with calcium, we become stronger than our bones – calcium can build up in our arteries, kidneys and other places in our body. Dr. Thompson reminds us throughout the book that “Calcium hardens concrete!”
Dr. entered medicine with an “altruistic” mindset. Thompson, becoming disillusioned with his work, was ready to quit. He reconsidered when he was voted one of “America’s Best Doctors” in 1996. Reassured, he decided to continue making a difference.
Minerally Bankruptcy (Chapter 1) – This basic chapter states that bones contain at least 12 minerals. “Too much calcium can cause:
• Seeds and stones
• Arterial plaque (and heart disease)
• Osteoarthritis (arthritis)
• Stores calcium in tissues other than bones
• Brain cell disorders, brain shrinkage and dysfunction.” (page 9)
• High blood pressure (p. 29)
• Obesity (p. 39)
• Migraines (p. 43)
“Too much calcium causes the adrenal glands to be suppressed so that the kidneys can retain the magnesium needed to try to keep these two minerals in balance.” (p. 19)
Before the invention of the refrigerator, our ancestors used sea or rock salt to store food. The natural balance of minerals is left behind by this change. “Because the mineral ‘footprint’ is passed from mother to child, each generation becomes deficient in these essential minerals.” (p. 12)
To add more injury to our system, when the use of iodine in baking and canning was replaced by cheaper bromine, we began to see an increase in “thyroid disease and cancer, breast cysts , fibrous changes, cyclic tenderness and cancer, prostrate. tumors and cancer, and ovarian hormone deficiency, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and ovarian cancer.” (p. 13)
Table salt is harmful to health and the best mineral supplements are rock or unrefined sea salt. Dr. Thompson explains that Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HMTA) provides the best analysis of mineral levels and guides the practitioner in proper supplementation. Trace Minerals, Inc. only encouraged him to take the test.
Throughout the book, Dr. Thompson gives a small lesson in biochemistry that all doctors learn in medical school. Surprisingly, most doctors have forgotten their biochemistry and continue to follow the “Calcium Lie”, “The Calcium Myth” (chapter 2), and “The Vitamin Lie” (chapter 7).
Our authors present chapters on the following health conditions and their relationship to calcium:
• Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Calcium (Chapter 3)
• Digestive problems: protein deficiency, sodium deficiency and cell disorders (chapter 4)
• Metabolic failure Caused by excess calcium leads to weight gain, thyroid and adrenal insufficiency and the five types of Hypothyroidism (chapter 5)
• Women’s Issues: Pregnancy, Childbirth and Menstruation (Chapter 6)
Stress plays an important role in our health. Thompson and Barnes discuss this problem and its relation to Calcium (chapter 8). They emphasized that “stress management must be a regular part of a healthy lifestyle.” (p. 176)
In chapter 9, The Road Back to Health, they give their readers the following steps:
1. Drink clean water.
2. Take an ionic sea salt supplement.
3. Whole food vitamins.
4. Essential fatty acids
5. Eat raw nuts and/or seeds every day.
6. Eat a high protein diet.
7. Get essential monosaccharides. (pp. 184-195)
Calcium Lie II concludes with chapter 10, “Doctor to Doctor: An Impassioned Plea.” He encourages his readers to copy this chapter and take it to their doctor or better yet buy a book for their doctor.
Dr. Thompson and Kathleen Barnes present the facts behind their claims. Reading and following his guidance will improve our health.
