Five Tips to Present Effortlessly
“I don’t like your personality” shouted my teacher as he kicked me out of the classroom and demanded to appear before the Grand Master. He gave me a full set of clothes and I vowed from then on to improve my attitude in school.
Having the right attitude or attitude is essential for people who speak or train in public. Here are six tips on how to do it.
Remove all worries
Remove all worries from your head. We all have merchandise in our heads. A long argument with your partner, a big mistake you made yesterday or losing a deal can affect your mood. The trick is to take the awareness and clear the head so you can focus on the present moment.
Dandy Warhol’s favorite early noughties number is about having a trap door in the back of my head. I use this analogy to get rid of all the thoughts that bring me down before I perform the scene. It works.
On the subject of Dandy Warhol, let’s get into music and how it affects your mood. As I type this I’m listening to my State Changer Playlist on my phone. This playlist contains several songs, lyrics and tracks from my collection that both control and influence my mood. I was performing in Bangladesh at 33,000 meters above the Himalayas and I wanted to boost my energy even more so I listened to my playlist.
Music is an anchor. Listening can recreate the mood that you experienced when you listened to the song or that you later incorporated into the lyrics. The anchor does that. Anchors can be meaningful – hearing something, seeing an image in your head, a physical touch on your body, a smell or a taste. They all bring back the attitude to you.
Collect anchors for each state you need. I use my playlist because it has the ability to change states instantly and I like my music. Right now I’m listening “I am the resurrection” from the Stone Roses voted Q Magazine’s top 10 guitars. It energizes me so I can go out into the audience and “give it big”.
On my checklist:
- The crow from the Stranglers for extra energy
- Good morning Great Britain from Aztec Camera for inspiration
- One day like this at the Elbow for concentration
- Nothing in my way by Keane for Perseverance
- A day of glory to Pulp as a campaign
You may see it differently.
In 2016, I attended private treatment because I applied for additional health insurance. The doctor was good, very good, and half of them told me without emotion or prejudice: “I’m losing a stone”.
I lost 25 pounds that year, I continued to go to the gym but I started doing weights and gained a little weight. Boy did it make a difference in how I felt about presenting it. This meant that all my clothes were completely loose and more comfortable.
It is important to be physically comfortable, loose clothing helps to learn to stand properly. I call it witnessing. Make sure that your body is well balanced, without leaning on both feet, feet shoulder width apart, slightly apart. Get rid of your attitude towards the end of school. Balance, stand straight, back – just like your mother told you before you left for school.
take a breath
Breathing to not just survive, is a phrase I heard at the annual conference of the Professional Speaking Association. Breathing is more than just breathing; it can affect your mood. Let me continue the story of my former private doctor.
He asked me to lie on the bed and proceeded to take my blood pressure. I have to admit that I was a bit depressed at the time, you see I was a real baby. After his first measure, he instructed me to be calm when he said that he could not submit this blood pressure to the insurance company, they would deny my claim.
I thought how can I relax? I breathed a sigh of relief. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly, verrry slowly. I did this for a minute and he took my blood pressure again. “It’s better, it’s more common”
I let out a small sigh.
So if you’re feeling a bit nervous, and your blood pressure is high, doing the breathing technique before you go on stage for a few minutes will calm you down, lower your heart rate and make you feel more relaxed. – presenting state.
Take it to the room
The goal here is to be one of the group. You will do this as your speech progresses, but to get the right attitude at first, adjust your peripheral vision. Many presenters will use their foveal vision and focus on a specific spot; it costs nothing to be one of the rooms. Choose a location and deliberately increase your peripheral skills by focusing on everything around you. This trains your brain to use your surrounding vision as you begin your speech, engaging the entire audience.
Usually someone introduces me on stage – it takes about 20 seconds. Usually I stand on the side behind the presenter, ready to shoot but when he introduces me, I focus on him but let my peripheral vision do the magic in the whole room and all the audience that I can.
When I start my speech, my brain is in peripheral mode and it allows me to be one of them. Then I relax the peripheral and go foveal making sure I give as many eyes as I can. The eyes are the window to the soul, let’s never forget that.
Actually, a little trade secret for you. Focusing on peripheral vision relieves nerves. Not many people know this.
Take control of the room
The bigger the audience, the more applause you’ll get after your introduction and the more effort you’ll have to put in to gain control. Here’s how:
Peripheral of the foveal eye around the chamber
Breathe in and take a confident, balanced and slow stance
The audience will also take a break
A clip around the ear from the Director soon cured my mood of years past. Hey can’t you do it anymore? Or the cane, which I suffered twice, which left nasty bruises over the years. Hasn’t the world changed but presenting to the audience requires you to have the right attitude.
