Physical comfort

Take it to the room

The goal here is to be one of the group. You will do this as your speech progresses, but to get the right attitude at first, adjust your peripheral vision. Many presenters will use their foveal vision and focus on a specific spot; it costs nothing to be one of the rooms. Choose a location and deliberately increase your peripheral skills by focusing on everything around you. This trains your brain to use your surrounding vision as you begin your speech, engaging the entire audience.

Usually someone introduces me on stage – it takes about 20 seconds. Usually I stand on the side behind the presenter, ready to shoot but when he introduces me, I focus on him but let my peripheral vision do the magic in the whole room and all the audience that I can.

When I start my speech, my brain is in peripheral mode and it allows me to be one of them. Then I relax the peripheral and go foveal making sure I give as many eyes as I can. The eyes are the window to the soul, let’s never forget that.

Actually, a little trade secret for you. Focusing on peripheral vision relieves nerves. Not many people know this.

Take control of the room

The bigger the audience, the more applause you’ll get after your introduction and the more effort you’ll have to put in to gain control. Here’s how:
