Coping With Baby Blues and Post Natal Depression

In this article I would like to offer some suggestions to help you with Baby Blues and Post Natal Depression (PND).

In the days of homeopathy, depression was often referred to as ‘sadness’. These days, we all know that depression can be much more than ‘sad’. negative, makes us uncomfortable and often scary.

I think of the Baby Blues as a natural emotional response after the incredible event that is ‘birth’. Think about how the body worked during the previous nine months, growing a new creature, copying DNA, collecting the great work that reproduces the blue print of the human being. Birth is traumatic for mom and bub, and then their bodies have to make huge adjustments – can’t you understand that there will be energy and stress? It takes a few days. Monitor your blood sugar levels carefully during this time. Regular small meals are key.

But if your sadness and distress continue.. or if it shows up months later, you must take action and seek help.

Do you always feel tired?

Are you feeling tired?

Are you stressed, angry or prone to tears?

Are you no longer interested in sex?

Do you have feelings.. can you feel depressed?

A PROBLEM THAT MANY NEW MOTHERS GET

Disappointed at birth?

Did your birth experience go as planned? Prepare for the event by practicing and negotiating the best possible conditions for the baby’s safety, but if things don’t go according to plan – maybe you have to have an epidural or forceps you, or cesarean … but disappointment, resentment or anger can increase and this can be a cause of depression.

Did they tell you the truth?

Has anyone really told you – I mean sit down and really tell you the TRUTH.. how demanding and exhausting it is to give birth and then take care of it day in and day out? Very likely – NO.. and if this is your second child did they tell you that a second child is NOT the same as having another child.. no, no, no.. a second child is more work!!

The child is sick!

There are also possible problems, colic, skin diseases, colds and small infections, persistent cough.

Your support network

And support – how much support do you get? Is everyone’s attention focused on the newborn and not on you?

Sleep and rest

Laying down and sleeping whenever the baby does this.. I know it sounds like you have to ‘get on with things’.. but sleep and rest are more important than washing..

You need to take some time, time for yourself.. relatives can really help. When my children were young I saw a local schoolgirl who came in at 3.15 every week and looked after the two children in another room, or took them on trips in the bus.. for two hours while I was cooking dinner.

Routine Routine Routine.. life saver!!

Find a routine that works for everyone. If you know that the holiday season is coming, you can do it during those hours. We have tea at five, bath at six and bed at seven and my husband and I take turns showering, washing the dishes and putting the baby to bed and then having tea in bed the next morning. The treatment worked and we have been doing it for years ..! So every day I know I can take a bath with the kids, relax in bed and drink tea in bed.

Just do what you can

Keeping up with household chores and shopping? It’s a HUGE lifestyle change going from a steady job where you have support and boundaries – to being at home with a new bub. Just do what you can each day. If you can’t breastfeed for some reason, don’t worry. So – these are all normal situations and needs and I often thought it was a miracle that my new MUM didn’t show any mild depression symptoms!

TREATMENT OF SEVERE DEPRESSION

Feeling overwhelmed, tired and a little irritable during the first months of motherhood is very normal and to be expected. However, it can feel more than that sometimes.

Do you get angry easily or even violently?

Do you want to rock the baby so it won’t stop crying?

Do you have suicidal thoughts?

Do you feel like you just go out and disappear?

Here are some symptoms that can indicate more severe postpartum depression

Ask your doctor, your local support group and your family for help. Antidepressant medications can help but provide good natural remedies. And, if you have a history of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, you MUST seek help as soon as you experience any postpartum depression symptoms.

Homeopathy is very helpful and you also need daily support and companionship, exercise, good sleep, good food, hugs and treats and lots of smiles and laughter.

EXERCISE EVERY DAY

A little tip I’ve used a lot with my depressed clients is to have a good laugh at least once a day. The release of laughter, from a joke or watching a funny movie … even if you don’t want to laugh when you put on the movie.

It really works.. try it! Our body does have the power to heal itself, but sometimes it doesn’t do what we think it can.

HOMEOPATHIC ADVICE

There are some amazing remedies to reduce the symptoms of baby blues and postpartum depression. Read through these medicine pictures and see if you find one that fits your symptoms.

1. SEPIA

This great medicine has helped thousands of women around the world. You feel depressed, have no emotions, are very tired and irritable and have no libido at all. You have that pulling feeling in your stomach, your periods are heavy and painful. Look in the mirror. Do you have saddle marks on your nose and lips, either yellow or slightly darker, maybe with freckles? This is a common Sepia symptom.

2. NAT MUR

Popular for treating depression, Nat Mur is a common salt used as a powerful medicine. Do you feel like crying and like you can’t handle it, but you don’t want to show it or tell anyone about it. In fact, anyone offers sympathy that really bothers you! You notice that you are often cold, with physical weakness and lack of energy. Other symptoms may include headaches, being more thirsty than usual, dry lips and even chapping.

3. IGNATIUS

This medicine seems to be full of conflicting states. Are you worried, always checking to see if the baby is okay? Do you find that your mood swings often? Are you sighing a lot! People will notice this and may ask what you are sighing about. What about coffee and tobacco… Ignatia can’t stand the smell or the taste. Are you worried about your weight? Looking for a diet to shed the pounds you gained while pregnant? These are all good signs that Ignatia can help you.

4. STAFISAGRIA

This medicine is given after a cesarean section, to help the will to recover quickly and if the woman is upset or upset during any aspect of the delivery process. Do you find that you need to talk to people about your birth experiences and especially if there are aspects that have caused you emotional distress. A couple of doses of Staph will clear up all those feelings and let you move forward with a positive attitude.

5. KALI PHOS

I treat all my new moms like Tissue Salt, twice a day for at least two months after the baby is born. It helps to gently raise your energy levels, and can lead to deeper, more restful sleep.

6. ARS ALB

So Ars Alb friends.. don’t be offended by these questions! Are you really worried and scared about everything about being a mother? Worried all the time that the baby will get sick? Does everything need to be neat and in place? The house should be clean, and all washing should be done; shopping and food prepared and on the table; Should the child be clean and tidy in case of visitors? Do you really need to have someone close by that you can rely on in case the worst happens?

That’s okay!! That’s who you are and there’s nothing wrong with it, ALL of it..

Well, your natural anxiety may cause you more stress than you need right now. Two other physical symptoms that Ars Alb people tend to experience are.. frequent colds, insomnia, generally better on hot summer days, liking acidic foods and drinks and especially coffee.

7. LACHESIS

This medicine has unique symptoms during this time. You feel bad when you wake up in the morning – kind of lazy and can’t think straight. You really need a nap in the afternoon, but know that you will be sad again when you wake up from your nap. You feel better if you can have a good conversation with a friend or relative, get all your worries out in the open. You’re so good at talking!

You don’t like hot places, you can’t bear to do anything hard around your waist, and often have physical problems like neck pain more on the left side of your body.

8. PULSATILLA

Imagine a small pulsatilla flower, alone in the middle of the vast plains of Russia. Blowing in the wind! It lives in sandy soil, and closes its petals when it’s hot and at night. SO – the pulsatilla woman loves the open air and finds her emotions very volatile. She is cold and cries easily.. sometimes she cries for no particular reason. You love sympathy and support and rely on your friends for comfort. Not thirsty? it’s a real pulsatilla.. you have to be reminded to drink. (If you’re breastfeeding, your body will give you stronger thirst signals than usual.)

Are you also a little frustrated and disorganized? Swollen ankles and wrists? Don’t like greasy food? These are just a few of the remedies I have successfully prescribed over the last 20 years for baby blues and postpartum depression.
