Hard Core Training Has New Meaning to Me

When I was 13, a family friend gave me a box of exercise magazines. I never thought that the man who inspired me the most, Arnold Schwarzenegger, would one day become the governor of California.

I participated in my first bodybuilding competition in 1984, at the age of 16. Since then, I have performed about 40 shows and won titles such as Mr. Philadelphia, Mr. Pennsylvania, Mr. Physics USA, and in 1993, Mr. . North America.

I was at the top of my game, getting ready to go pro, when my body started giving me problems. In 1994-95, I had problems with my balance and leg strength. I was at work with my friend the other day and I told her that I looked on the Internet and thought I might have Multiple Sclerosis.

He just laughed and said, “Paul, you don’t have MS, you just weighed 550 pounds!” I laughed at that too; there was no way I had MS. But in my mind, I realized I was sitting on a Smith machine; it didn’t require me to balance myself.

As my health took a turn for the worse, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1997. I was still competing a year later, but without sight. This caused me to fall into a deep depression, and with MS, it also caused a lot of stress. Since I was feeling very down, I asked my doctor to give me anti-depressants, sleeping pills, and muscle relaxants. The drugs made me more tired and depressed, and my MS progressed to the point where I was confined to a wheelchair.

I sat in a wheelchair for a long time, feeling sorry for myself. Then I met my wife, Judy, and she told me that I had to accept my MS. I told her I didn’t like it and I hated it, but she explained that I had to do something other than despair. I’m not sure if I can, because my doctor told me I have early progressive MS. This is the worst kind; you are not getting better.

I decided not to believe the doctor, and went back to the gym to start exercising. I found out which muscles are most affected by MS – the core muscles (abs, hips, and back muscles). When they are weak, they are like flowers with weak stems that fall when the wind blows. That’s me, and that’s why people with MS look for things to help them balance. I also learned about core muscles by watching my son Tyler. When he was 7 months old, he had the strength in his legs to propel himself to a standing position, but I had to hold him for balance. When he was 11 months old, he always used the crib to support himself while walking – just like I had to do. Then, I realized that for babies the core muscles are the last to develop, and in people with MS, or other medical conditions, they go first. Before he could walk, Tyler dropped to his knees. I thought, “What a fun way to exercise; do it on your knees and challenge your balance. You don’t have to worry about falling!” I also found that when I woke up new muscles, I was able to relax and walk better.

The average person moves about 60-70% of their muscles during their whole life, bodybuilders about 75% (they are bigger), but a dancer or gymnast wakes up on 90% or more. I thought to myself, “Wow! If I can hit those muscles, it’ll be like having spare tires for your car.” So the way I did it was through a balance challenge using a Swiss ball, or standing on an air cushion. Both strengthen the foundation.

I moved to California in 2001. When I returned to the restaurants, I realized that they were not wheelchair accessible. Bathrooms and parking are certainly accessible, but facilities rarely are. I applied to work at Club-One, even though they didn’t have wheelchair access. When I told the manager about my mission to help the disabled community, he was very receptive. That’s why I decided to work there.

During my interview, the fitness manager asked if I knew what basic training was. At the time, I wasn’t used to it so I tried to joke, “Well, it’s hard training. I’ve been doing it for 20 years.” He didn’t laugh, but I got the job anyway.

I started training people with disabilities, but I realized that many people with physical disabilities did not come to the gym because the equipment was not accessible. I decided to do something about it, and in 2002, my wife and I opened Accessible Fitness, a fully wheelchair accessible gym in Santa Clara, California. We specialize in working with people of all ages and fitness levels, and not only are all our strength camps wheelchair accessible, but the also crab gear.

Today I help people young and old to get stronger, lose weight, get six pack abs and others who need more strength and muscle so they can get out of a wheelchair.

“My life is different now because I feel through exercise, I have regained control of my life and I no longer have to succumb to this thing they call MS. I am inspired by the people at the gym every day and I’m competing for everyone again. who have some kind of physical challenge.”

I am no longer in a wheelchair and will be competing this year in the Mr. America. Even if I have to use a cane, I am there, win or lose, to advocate for people with physical disabilities like myself.

For a long time I asked myself, “Why me?” But then I realized that this is my calling, my love in life.
