A November/December 2006 supplement to the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior presented the new MyPyramid Food Guidance System, a replacement for the previous Pyramid Guide to nutrition, based on years of research.
According to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), healthy foods:
o emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk or milk and milk products
o include lean meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts

Tufts University researchers have updated the Food Pyramid Guide for Adults to be compatible with MyPyramid. This modified version of MyPyramid continues to emphasize nutrient-dense food choices and the importance of fluid balance, but has added additional guidance on what types of foods can meet the needs of adults. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of regular exercise.
The Modified MyPyramid for Older Adults was published in the January 2008 issue of the Journal of Nutrition. Adding to the new pyramid is a base that shows typical physical activities for adults, such as walking, yard work and swimming.
Government statistics indicate obesity is on the rise among adults aged 70 and over, exercise is one way to prevent weight gain later in life and its negative effects . Older adults need fewer calories as they age because their metabolic rate slows. Although they continue to exercise, they are often not as physically active as they were in childhood. But their bodies still require the same or higher nutrients to maintain optimal health. Regular physical activity is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases, reduced body weight and improved quality of life in older adults.
Tufts University’s recommendations for older adults include the following:
o Whole, fortified and fortified cereals and grains such as brown rice & 100% whole wheat bread
o Brightly colored vegetables such as carrots and broccoli
o Deeply colored fruits such as berries and melons
o Low-fat dairy products such as yogurt and low-lactose milk
o dry beans and nuts, fish, poultry, lean meat and eggs
o Vegetable oil with vegetable juices and a mild spread of soap and trans fats
o Drinking water
o Physical activity such as walking, housework and yard work.
