Bodybuilding: Gym Etiquette
Most people who exercise do so in public gyms. In order to respect others and help make the practice accessible to all, there is a certain etiquette to follow. Most of the gym etiquette comes down to common sense and politeness but it needs to be said because anyone who works out sees ongoing violations.
First of all, put your weights back in the fridge and remove the plates from the bars and machines after use. There is nothing worse than working out with dumbbells scattered all over the place. It’s confusing and hard to find what you’re looking for. There is nothing worse than a barbell left on the floor with five 45-pound plates on its side or a leg press left with ten plates. You’d think a strongman using such heavy weights would have been in the gym long enough to know more.
It is very lazy and ignorant to wait for others to come and clean up the mess. It is difficult for some people who are smaller and weaker to remove a ton of sheets from a machine when they want to use it. This can have a negative impact on their experience. Make weight training a part of your workout routine.
Place the towel on the bench or machine or clean up after yourself. It’s absolutely disgusting to walk up to a bench you want to use and find it covered in sweat. Not to mention unsanitary. Bring a towel to the gym and use it. It’s a great habit to get into and you’ll find that you’ll love having a towel to wipe off your sweat while you train.
Leave your cell phone in the locker room or your car. If your wife isn’t pregnant and maybe a second, you can definitely go an hour or so without a phone call. Spend your time in the gym focusing on training and use it as a break from your daily life. Talking on the phone distracts others around you at the gym who are trying to focus on their workout session. Leave the outside and just train. You will get better results.
Try not to make too much noise by dropping weights, plates and dumbbells. It can also damage equipment, especially dumbbells. If you use heavy dumbbells for pressing, learn how to return them to the floor without letting them just fly off your hands. Use the spotter if necessary. Many people will be happy to help you.
Be aware of what’s going on around you and pay attention to what others are doing. You might learn some things that way and keep yourself from getting in someone else’s way. It’s very annoying to turn around or go to get a drink of water and see that someone has taken your dumbbells or is using the machine you were sitting on.
Another major annoyance is body odor. Try to wear gym clothes that are new. It also shows how bad you are if you wear a sweaty yellow t-shirt that just stinks. Likewise, avoid applying perfume or cologne before hitting the floor. You may think you smell great but chances are others will find it very offensive.
Here are a few quick ones. If you want to sit and read, go to the library. Don’t do it while you’re sitting on the machine at the gym. Do not do curls in the squat rack. Do not wear flip-flop style sandals. Try not to shout loudly. I can understand some grunting (honestly, training can be tough) but not screaming like a banshee. Also, come to the gym to train, not socialize. Small talk between sets is natural, but spend your time exercising your body, not your voice. It’s great to meet new people at the gym, but don’t treat it like a meat market or a singles bar.
These seem to represent the most common things that bother people at the gym. Everyone has their own pet peeve or something they’ve seen in the gym that they find annoying. That’s the price you pay for going public. However, you should understand that the neighborhood is coming. So if you make a little effort to respect others while exercising, it will pay off in a big way.
