FUN FACT: food tastes good, exercise is painful.
If only it were as easy as the ads say. Of course, we all want to believe the media announcements about the miracle weight loss pill and nutritional drinks. Unfortunately they thrive on our discomfort with our own image. When people perceive that they need to look good to feel good, they would believe anything thrown (literally) in their face.
Doctors not only recommend that regular exercise is good for you, they also suggest taking it long-term. What the so-called weight loss experts don’t tell you is that exercise is a lifestyle, not a hobby. Our bodies are like our doctors. As they become familiar with a daily routine, they fit in like an oil rig, drilling until they score points. Our brain then releases chemical reactions, which help us with a sharp brain to focus better.
Here are some tips to help you stay focused and maintain a healthy lifestyle
1. Set a schedule: Not many people have a daily schedule, so their days are usually worked out at a haphazard pace. Establish a time that incorporates exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Even if exercise is the only thing on paper. Make a time-out schedule you call “MY TIME”, to relax, meditate, do breathing exercises or take a nap! Trust your body, it works wonders for it.
2. Know that food is not the problem, but the solution: Most people talk about fad diets as a means to deprive themselves of food or to undereat. However, the reality is that we need to eat food to give our body the fat it needs to keep going. Am I saying eat as much as you want? NO! Eat what your body wants. The painful truth is that people are not educated enough in knowing the right foods for their bodies. What is right for one is not necessarily right for another. If you enjoy dining out, pick a day to eat your favorite food as a reward for strict abstinence and endless sweat.
3. Prepare for long and short term commitments: Consult your doctor or do a proper research on the internet about vitamin X foods and how to prepare them properly so as to keep them nutritious. You only have to do this once though. Choose a new indoor or outdoor activity (swimming, karate, tennis, basketball, soccer, gymnastics), as long as you sweat while doing it. It’s a good way to kick off your new lifestyle if you’re not used to breaking a sweat. Plus you make good friends.
Just remember that losing weight should become a second priority to healthy living. Many have had strokes while in yoga class or just jogging. So exercise is but an activity, living is an astounding journey that should be undertaken with careful thought, respect and patience.
NB: in section 3: do not eat out so often in the hope that exercise means you are safe. It should be once in a while, roughly once or twice a month. Then fix it once a week as time goes on.
