Why Intermittent Fasting Is My Choice For Health, Fat Loss And Muscle Gain

First of all, intermittent fasting (or IF) is a lifestyle choice. It’s not a fad diet, and it’s nothing that has just been invented by me or anyone else in the last….ohhhh….a thousand years? Fasting has been a natural way to heal since the dates of 10,000 BC. Animals fast when they are sick, children fast when they are sick… the body just doesn’t want food when it knows it has other work to do to repair and heal itself. So knowing that fasting is just a natural part of being healthy, I chose it as a lifestyle to do…whether once a week…or somehow daily. Below are a few more reasons why I choose to make IF my lifestyle.

* No more worrying about food all day – I did the 6 meals a day, cooking all weekend, packing meals to take with me…and then I asked myself, is this the way to live? That and it wasn’t realistic that this was something I was going to do or enjoy for the rest of my life, there had to be a better way to be healthy.

* I can enjoy food out with friends when I choose – So I go out and have some wings and beer on the weekends, most of the time I never eat sugar, eat a lot of veggies and meat and only drink water. The occasional night out doesn’t spoil my “figure” at all.

* It’s cheaper – Although I still eat a lot, in general I eat less. That and most people don’t usually cook at home so they go buy meals. I still eat 3 times a day, it’s not about starving. But I also need fewer calories when IF, so fewer pounds of meat to buy. In short, it saves me money!

* No bars or shakes required – Again, it saves me money. All the people out there pushing you to eat 6 times a day are probably people selling prepackaged meals, bars or smoothies (ever notice that?). Don’t get me wrong, eating 6 times a day can work in weight loss because your total daily calorie intake is still low! There is no metabolic benefit to eating 6 times versus 3 times a day. Eat whole foods 3 times a day and make them healthy and you will lose weight too! Plus all those candy bars are loaded with sugar, so how does that help insulin resistance?

* More mental clarity and concentration – This is what I notice all day! Amazing that now just a little Americano in the morning (2 shots of espresso in hot water, less caffeine than coffee) will do me good all day long. There’s a reason people who eat a big breakfast or lunch fall asleep hours later, because digestion takes a lot of energy.

* Performance levels are still high (if not higher) – I would not have continued to do IF if I had seen that the things I loved doing were negatively affected. So I can still play sports and lift weights and feel great while doing it.

* I want to stay healthy and live longer – Studies everywhere (you can read as many as you like on the resources page. Thanks also go to Chris at Conditioning Research for helping provide more links to the studies) indicating that fasting has been shown to improve insulin resistance, decrease risks of heart disease, help prevent many other diseases and make the body more resistant to negative stimuli (the protective effect of fasting). CR studies have also shown to increase lifespan, while IF isn’t about chronic low calories, it has the side benefit of being about to eat less than usual and still maintain muscle and performance (so it’s CR vs your average daily intake normally required).

* I can gain muscle mass and lose fat with fewer calories – Again going back to CR longevity somewhat, the less you eat the longer you will live. Now I still want to keep my muscles or gain more from time to time. So I’ve personally found that I can do it on IF, while still needing far fewer calories than I used to. Nothing is gross like pushing 5000 calories a day and feeling lethargic and tired all just to get bigger muscles. Not the way I want to live my life.

* I believe that the only real cure is Prevention – I’m not waiting for science to say they have cured all diseases, as I don’t think they will find a cure for any in my lifetime. So it’s my responsibility to take care of my health, as health is a personal choice! Fasting is the body’s natural way of boosting its health and reducing many (if not most) risks of disease. There are no guarantees in life that we will never get sick, but we can only take preventive measures.

* Seems legit – Back when I ate all day I felt very tired, had increasing joint pain (especially in my knees), found it harder to recover from ice hockey games, had more depression days, felt more bloated. After a couple of years playing with IF I now feel 1000 times better, I have no more knee pain, I can recover faster from hockey, lose weight, have more clarity, enjoy life more…and I’m probably much healthier at 36 than I was at 30! It seems natural to give my body time off from eating to take care of itself, as I don’t think we were built to live our lives on eating alone.
