How to Stop Eating Too Much Food
How many of you have had days where you ate almost nothing but junk? Don’t you feel horrible afterwards? Your stomach hurts, you feel depressed and irritable, and your energy levels plummet. Also, the waistband is so tight that it becomes difficult to breathe. You are sure to gain more pounds by the end of the week. Why is this happening you might ask?
You are not alone. I also struggled at times with eating too many of the wrong foods. Yes, even though I’m a health coach who empowers people to eat and live well, I too have moments from time to time. What’s important is that you take a moment to figure out what’s going on in your life that could be contributing to your overeating. Once you know the cause, you can think of possible solutions. Below are 3 main causes of my recent tummy ache and mood swing snack party along with my solutions:
Buy more than you need for the occasion: For my dad’s birthday I bought these delicious chocolate cupcakes with a creamy, dairy-free frosting from my health food store The Whole Earth Center, but I bought more cupcakes than they were just for him, and I ended up eating the rest. Now granted, these cupcakes were made with only ingredients I could pronounce and contained absolutely no trans fat. In fact, these cupcakes were made with heart-healthy monounsaturated oils. However, the cupcakes contained refined white flour and sugar and lots of calories without much nutrition.
Solution: Buy only the amount of dessert you need and no more or better yet, think of a non-sweet gift to give. I’ll be sure to do that next time!
Too focused on work: One day at work I felt more productive than usual. There was a flow. I was making great progress. When 5:30 pm rolled around, I continued to work. When 18:30 arrived, I continued to work. I didn’t stop work until 9pm. At this point I was extremely hungry. There was no way I was going to make dinner right now. I went to Whole Foods and ate way more than I normally would. I also drank a mocha soy drink that equaled two servings and about 350 calories in one go, and ate a bag of Waffle Fries that totaled about 600 calories.
Solution: Don’t let work or an extremely busy life take over you. You have to stop regularly to take a break and eat whatever comes your way. If you’re having trouble figuring out what time it is because you’re so immersed in work or whatever activity you’re having, set a timer or plan a lunch or dinner with a friend.
You will also be more productive in the end because taking breaks every 3 hours actually increases productivity. I’m back to eating regular meals at regular times. In fact today I wanted to continue working when it was noon and I stopped. It was time to pack lunch and eat or I would have run into another overeating situation.
Boredom strikes: I have been busy with work and taking care of my elderly parents. I didn’t plan as many fun activities as I had in the past. So what happens? I’m bored. What’s a quick and easy way to take care of boredom? Eat something delicious. For me, that delicious something was a box of soy ice cream bars.
Solution: Take the time to plan something fun into your life at least once a week. The first action I took was to put together a list of friends I wanted to meet up with and started reaching out to them. Next, I came up with some ideas for a weekend getaway that both my husband and I would enjoy. Finally, I am exploring the possibility of participating in some type of group activity that meets regularly in which I have a personal interest.
It took me a full day of eating well to feel normal again after 3 days of awful eating. I’m happy to say I’m back on track and feeling great again. Hopefully, my personal story will give you some ideas and/or motivation to get back on track even if you’re currently struggling with overeating the wrong kind of food. Take some time to think about what makes you eat so much and then think about ways to correct the situation. This approach can work wonders!
