Getting Off the Diet Rollercoaster – The Difference Between Diet Vs. Lifestyle Change
One of my fabulous clients described her journey to permanent weight loss like this: “It’s like I was on a roller coaster when I was on a diet. Now I’m in the driver’s seat, leading the change.”
I thought this was a great metaphor for diet vs. lifestyle change.
Let’s think about this.
When you’re on a diet roller coaster:
- You feel out of control.
- It’s scary.
- Emotions rage with good days and bad days. Emotions always lead to emotional eating and comfort food.
- The number on the scale can send you on a spree.
- Disappointment, sadness, anxiety, and other day-to-day happenings trigger crazy eating, followed by food restrictions and new diet promises all over again tomorrow, next Monday, or next month.
- Follow someone else’s plan – it could be a diet, a book, a program. These plans never address the needs of your personal body, but are generalized approaches.
- You “wake up” with an empty plate, candy wrapper, cookie tin, or other container in front of you and have no idea how it got there or where the food went.
- You try to control the crazy momentum by counting something (calories, aerobic output, whatever).
- You think the wrong choices say something about your personal character.
- Lots. Struggle diminishes your efforts, your success, and ultimately your dreams.
- You constantly fluctuate between weights, yo-yo-ing up and down the scale. Finally, you return to the beginning, where you started, in the “loading zone” of the roller coaster ride.
You know you are making a lifestyle change and are leading the change when:
- You are the authority on what food is the best fuel for YOUR body and you know exactly what produces great energy for your unique physiology.
- You constantly fuel your body for optimal energy.
- Make decisions easily, without mental combat occurring.
- You face any emotion, obstacle or event DIRECTLY, without buffering it with food.
- You never make excuses, but you OWN every decision and action.
- You feel empowered. You’re driving. You are choosing the path you take.
- You treat yourself with respect and love under all circumstances, whatever you ate that day.
- Travel leads to new places, new discoveries and wide open vistas because you are not on a “track”, you are in an ever changing life.
Getting off the diet roller coaster isn’t just about losing weight. It’s about quality of life. It’s about living a fully empowered life, instead of empowering a plan, diet, or anything that isn’t organic to your amazing physical body.
Weight loss without dieting is also the one that lasts. Isn’t that what we ultimately want when we think about lowering the number on the scale, anyway?
