Does Jon Benson’s Every Other Day Diet Work?

When I first came across Jon Benson and Janis Hauser’s eBook “The Every Other Day Diet” (aka EODD), I’ll admit I was both intrigued and a little skeptical.

How come?

Let’s just say “The Alternate Day Diet” is a little unconventional. His methods seem unrealistic at first glance, a bit “too good to be true” if you will. This was my first impression anyway…

Unlike most diets that rely on heavy calorie restrictions to burn fat, this program actually encourages you to eat whatever you want every other day! Sounds good if it actually works, right?

The real question is, can a diet like this actually help you lose weight and keep it off? In all honesty I wouldn’t have thought that myself, but I had to give co-author Jon Benson the benefit of the doubt as he is a respected fitness expert who has published numerous diet and fitness related books over the past few years.

However, I had come to the decision that the program deserved further examination and bought a copy so that I could share a review with my readers…

What exactly is “EODD”?

I have my explanation of “The Every Other Day Diet” below, but before you read it you might want to hear Jon Benson himself explain how this program works and why it’s different than most of the others out there.

Why should we talk to Jon? Well, the boy practices what he preaches. He was able to lose 70 lbs. using the same principles on which he based The EODD.

Once I started to understand the simple science behind EODD, things started to make more sense. The program is designed to limit calories and burn body fat without impairing your body’s ability to burn calories. In the eBook they call it “interval eating” and “planned variance,” fancy words for calorie cycling.

What is calorie cycling?

Simply put, it’s a way to manipulate your calorie intake and trick your body into thinking calories are Not be limited, when in fact they are.

So why does your body need to be tricked into thinking there is no calorie deficit? Well, your body starts slowing down its metabolic rate making it harder and harder to lose weight. Unfortunately this is a survival mechanism that has been around since we were cavemen!

EODD uses calorie cycling to maximize your metabolic rate, which makes perfect sense.

The structure of the EODD diet

The “every other day diet” is divided into what they call “burn days” and “feed days.” On burn days, you only eat 30-50% of your maintenance calorie intake. During feeding days, you consume up to 150% of your maintenance calorie intake. You are allowed to eat any foods you like these days as long as portions are controlled.

And that brings me to what Jon calls the HOME (Hands on Method of Food Eating) method of figuring out how much food you should be consuming.

Simply put, food portions match up with different parts of your hands, making it pretty easy to measure portion sizes.

Can I eat all the foods I want?

Well yes and no. Let me explain…

There are three different variations of the EODD that you can choose from:

  1. Primer – This is the most flexible of the three programs and essentially allows you to eat whatever you want every other day.
  2. Lifestyle – The maintenance program, recommended after the initial primer phase. There are only two “feeding days” here, which means you can only eat whatever you want for these two days.
  3. Extreme – The most rigorous of the three plans, designed for athletes and bodybuilders.

The “primer” is the only program that you can eat whatever you want every other day. Jon recommends starting with this program and switching to the “lifestyle” program which only allows for two days a week where you can eat any type of food.

In the end I think the every other day diet is definitely worth a try if you’re looking for a simple program that will help you lose weight while still enjoying some of the foods you love.

Simply put, if traditional diets haven’t worked for you, then the alternate day diet may be the approach you need to take.
