Walking – An Underrated Form of Exercise for Weight Loss

Most people lead very busy lifestyles. For example, I hold two jobs – one full-time and one part-time. I sit for 12 hours a day three times a week. Sitting for a long time without any physical activity. This is why many who work in office settings put on weight and find it difficult to shed the extra pounds.

I got to the point where I don’t know what to do for exercise. I don’t have time to join the gym. I don’t have time to run home and change into gym clothes. Walking after work is an easy solution for me on days when I only work at my day job. I wear or bring tennis shoes on those days and after work, I take a nice walk in town. Sometimes I change the place I walk but I get a 30 – 45 minute walk every time.

It can be difficult to view walking as a form of exercise. Many people think that you have to be dripping in sweat to have an effective workout. Well, considering that many people do not exercise, walking is a great benefit for many people. Some of the advantages include:

  • Low impact – not hard on the knees
  • You can walk anywhere
  • Improves circulation
  • Helps control weight (lose weight)
  • Vary your pace – walk at a moderate to fast pace

Can you lose weight by walking? I would say absolutely! Losing weight has a lot to do with the food you eat. If you’re eating junk regularly, even daily exercise won’t help you lose weight. However, eating a healthy diet and incorporating basic exercise such as walking can help you lose any extra weight.

You can walk every day or a few times a week. The best thing is that you can walk anywhere. Do you live near a beach or tourist area? If you’re in a big city, you’ll find tons of cool places to walk. This is one of the easiest forms of exercise to start with.

If your goal is to lose weight, cleaning up your diet is very important. An easy way to do this is to reduce the amount of bad carbs you eat. That means cutting out white bread, white rice, and especially sugar. A lot of foods you might not consider containing sugar have sugar in them so be sure to read your labels.

Starting a regular walking program is easy. You can start at your own pace and increase the speed when you are ready. As long as you’re moving, you’re already on the right track to good health.
