The Four Stages of Dieting

A question I am often asked by people is whether I still worry about what I eat. I’m afraid I’ll grow up again and only now do I eat sawdust and salad to stay slim. The answer, I’m glad to say, is that I now eat normally like other thin people do. I have a lot of different types of food, some classified as healthy and some classified as junk food. The reality is that I have now found my restraint and it has become a way of life for me. I’m also not scared of being big again because I like being skinny and value my health too much to overeat and gain weight.

But getting to the stage where you’re just skinny and don’t have to diet or struggle with your weight is a journey, but figuring out where you are on that journey is a good sign that you’re heading in the right direction.

So the four stages of being thin, in order, are…

1. Happy Big – This is when you eat without worrying about the consequences or you realize it’s bad for you too. It’s when you don’t realize you’re putting your health at risk and have no thoughts of cutting back or eating fewer calories. It is an ignorant state where if someone mentions that you are overweight you will be shocked by the statement and not interested in doing anything about it.

2. Sad Big – This is when you know you are big and want to do something about it, you beat yourself up, you plan a diet, you plan to be skinny but then you don’t take action to do it. You beat yourself up because you’re big and to cheer yourself up you eat more and enter a vicious circle. You start a diet on Monday and stop it by Wednesday and then struggle to get back on the diet bandwagon.

3. Sad Slim – This is when you’ve managed to lose weight but have “resisted on”. Maybe you’re skinny but you obsess over what you eat, you fear being grown up again, you’re skinny but somehow you’re not really happy. You always jump on the scale after a big meal and don’t recognize yourself in the mirror. Do you diet during the week to allow yourself to go overboard or eat too much and then try not to eat for a while to undo the damage. You can name the calories in the most common foods.

4. Happy Slim – You’re just busy doing something more interesting, eating healthy food without having to actively think about it, and just happy that you’re slim. You no longer notice diet books or worry about your weight and simply moderate your lifestyle to allow you to still enjoy food but without abusing it. You are actually happy with what you see in the mirror and you like yourself.

Now where are you? Seriously? Are you thin or do you still have a few pounds to lose? Is it still about the food?

By reading this article you must have gone through stage one as anyone who is Happy Big wouldn’t know they had a problem and therefore wouldn’t read it. And you won’t be Happy Slim because you still wouldn’t care about weight if it weren’t still a problem and therefore, either you’re overweight and sad about it, or you’re skinny and having a hard time staying that way.

Now it’s absolutely fine!! It means you are human, making your way down a road on a mission to Happy Slim.

When I first got to my goal weight I was very Sad Slim. I just obsessed over what I could eat and calculated the calories of everything and tried to keep them down. That worked for a while, but it’s a very tiring way to live your life if you can’t buy a sandwich without looking at the amount of grams of fat per 100g and figuring out if the calories are low enough. Eventually you will give up.

My point then is for you to review where you stand. It doesn’t matter where you are, but it’s important that you realize where you are and that you have a plan for going down that road and taking the action to get there.
