Bulimia Stories – The Ugly Underside of a Hidden Addiction

Stories of bulimia are full of stories of women secretly leading double lives. These are talented, capable, intelligent and successful women as anyone can tell. However, they live their lives hidden in the grip of addiction which is ruining their lives without coming to anyone’s attention.

Bulimia starts out seemingly innocuous – a desire to look good and be in good shape. But soon it becomes an unhealthy obsession to avoid getting fat. You think about food all the time, check yourself in the mirror countless times a day, live by the numbers on the scale, and get frustrated when you meet people who eat whatever they want and never gain weight.

Others don’t see the person you see in the mirror and no matter what size you are, you will never be happy with your body. You get fat when everyone says you’re thin. If this resonates with you, I know what I’m talking about and I know how you feel because I’ve had bulimia for over 20 years.

Living two lives

You may have (or had) good grades in school and be part of a sports team or be president of your class. Your friends and family may think you really have it all together. But you don’t, do you? Inside you are insecure, suffering in silence and stressing that someone might find out.

This life duality depends on the day of the week or time of day. When I was in my 20s I went to work every day and lived a seemingly normal life. What happened after I quit was different from anyone else’s. I used to buy food from shop to shop and go home. I would binge and purge for hours before exhaustion lulled me to sleep. Most weekends I spend all day binging and purging, only going out with my friends at night to maintain the outward appearance of living a normal life.

I have read many bulimia stories over the years to see if my behaviors are unique to me. Sadly, this way of life is very common in bulimics. Although there are differences between bulimics, what is common is a pattern of living an outwardly normal, healthy life and an inner life of struggle and isolation.

Re-writing stories of bulimia

The cause of your bulimia (some underlying emotional need) is driving you to use your addiction to avoid pain and stress in your life. But, the pain and stress are actually worse because of your bulimia. If you stop for a moment and look at the ugly underside of your addiction, you will see how it makes you feel and the things you do because of it.

How can you be truly happy or feel good about yourself if you allow food to be all you want?

You go to great lengths to maintain a meaningless facade of normalcy because you don’t want to deal with how your life is unfolding or how you feel deep down. Bulimia is only a temporary escape from your problems. If you think it is not, then it is a disease of you.

Have you ever noticed that everything that upset you before you binged is still there after the cleanse?

It’s a never-ending cycle and you’re wasting years of your life avoiding problems that aren’t really bad if you work through them. Your eating disorder tells you that you’d rather live a miserable, secretive life than face reality. As a recovered bulimic I’m here to tell you, living just one day without bulimia and dealing with problems is better than 20 years of addiction running your life.

It’s time to rewrite the next chapter of your life. Imagine a life without bulimia and start learning how to stop your binge eating. Because I’ve done it, I know you can too. It is possible and the only way to happiness.
