In my quest for smaller sized jeans, I recently tried The Scarsdale Diet. It was designed by a real doctor, so it seems like a good healthy option. Before I commit to this diet I wish I could talk to someone who has actually tried this diet. Here is a review of The Scarsdale Diet by one of its followers:

The Scarsdale Diet is a one- to two-week diet that consists of meals made up of 43% protein, 22.5% fat, and 34.5% carbohydrates. Typical results for those who strictly follow the plan are ten to twenty pounds of weight loss.

Followers of this program follow a strict diet for two weeks, which leads to a less strict diet plan in the next week or two. A later, less rigorous plan is referred to as a “keep trim” program.

The Good- As mentioned above, you can lose ten to twenty pounds in just a couple of weeks. These results are amazing. Since the program is mostly based on protein intake, you can enjoy a variety of lean meats. You can dress your meat with lemon, vinegar, mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and herbs. You can eat most any vegetable except heavy starches: corn, peas, potatoes and many beans. If you love meat and are an expert on the grill, you will enjoy this dish.

Although drinking plenty of water is recommended, the Scarsdale diet allows for the use of artificial sweeteners so you may be able to keep your diet soda as well.

Exercise is over! You can sit back and relax as you drop pounds on this plan. The Scarsdale Diet Plan states that exercise is not recommended for anyone over forty who is not already on a planned exercise routine.

The bad- you may lose ten to twenty pounds in just a couple of weeks, you may not actually lose fat. Most of the weight lost during this period is water weight (which will come back as soon as you start eating normally again). Another form of weight loss is from your lean muscle mass. Losing muscle is doubly bad because your muscle helps burn fat. Lose muscle, lose the ability to burn more fat.

If you’re not a vegetarian, you won’t like the Scarsdale Diet’s meal plan. If you enjoy a baked potato (or any baked good you can get at the bakery) you’re denying yourself a lot. Salads are wonderful and tasty, but how delicious is vinegar or lemon as a dressing? If you’re a vegetarian, you’re not going to get enough protein with this diet as beans, your main source of protein, are strictly limited.

Fun things like pasta and pizza are a strict no-go, as are fries, brownies, rolls and croissants. What kind of life would you live if you couldn’t partake in its simple pleasures?

Drinking water is your only healthy option with this plan. Although sodas with artificial sweeteners are allowed, not many people claim they are “healthy.”

You don’t need to exercise, which might sound like a great plus for the entire population of couch potatoes. The bad news is that with severe calorie restriction (only 800-1000 calories are allowed per day) you probably won’t have the energy to get off the couch in the first place.

Final Verdict:

If you have a high school reunion and you just need to fit into your old jeans for a day or two, you might want to try the Scarsdale Diet. If you are a non-vegetarian who eats meat in an unfashionable way, you can really enjoy this food. If you eat a variety of foods on a regular basis and don’t want to restrict yourself too much, the Scarsdale Diet will limit you too much.

Either way, you will eventually regain any weight lost on this program as soon as you return to your normal eating schedule. Is it worth it? It’s up to you. Now you can make your own informed decision.
