Almonds Vs Carbohydrates For Weight Loss

Did you know that almonds can help you lose weight? Although high in fat, did you know that almonds are better than complex carbohydrates like oatmeal?

Someone at Men’s Health recently asked, “What are the worst forms of starchy carbohydrates?”

Also, starches are plant sources of carbohydrates… ie) potatoes, yams, vegetables, etc.

Obviously, potatoes are more calorie dense than broccoli, so if you want to lose fat, it’s better to fill up on leafy greens than mashed potatoes.

I have found with myself and clients that we lose belly fat faster when we cut out bread, pasta and rice and limit carbohydrate intake to vegetables, fruits and nuts.

Combined with interval training, eliminating bread, pasta, rice and potatoes can help us lose fat faster. Instead of eating those types of carbs, we focus on fruits and vegetables and nuts like almonds and pecans.

It is very simple.

In fact, science backs me up.

In a study published in 2003, researchers found that subjects lost more weight when they ate almonds compared to complex carbohydrates.

Since then, I have been recommending raw almonds to all my clients and millions of people who read my articles on the Internet and in Men’s Health magazine.

But some people still find it difficult to eat almonds. Too boring, they say.

So here are 4 ways to add extra delight to your almonds. Of course, make sure your almond intake fits your daily calorie needs.

A) Snack on dry roasted, unsalted almonds. Roasted are always delicious, but be careful and use only the dry-roasted variety, not the almonds roasted in oil. You can roast your own at home by placing almonds on a baking sheet in your oven at 350 for about 10 minutes.

(That is, there are 22 almonds in a one-ounce serving.)

b) Add raw cacao nibs. There’s nothing like the combination of chocolate and nuts. Now, I’ll admit, this combination doesn’t beat a cup of peanut butter, but it’s still a great way to get more antioxidants (from the cocoa) and give your almonds an interesting flavor.

c) Add goji berries. It’s an acquired taste, but these dried fruits from Asia are packed with amino acids, vitamins and minerals. A delicious zing to add to your almonds.

d) Mix blueberries with your almonds. Perfect for this time of year. (And if you’re saving some calories, pour some organic whipping cream over the mix. Now that’s a post-workout snack!)

Personally, I pack a bag of dry roasted almonds on Thursday when I’m headed to Bethesda, Maryland for a couple of days for a meeting. Also ideal for airport, flight and hotel breakfast. Almonds beat carbs for fat burning and make for a great snack!
