The other day, I received an email from someone who asked if buying frozen meals at the grocery store like Lean Cuisine or the NutriSystem diet would produce the same weight loss results. She sensed that frozen meals were cheaper, though she suspected they wouldn’t produce drastic results. Still, she hoped to lose some weight from the grocery store and asked my opinion on this. I will tell you what I told her in the next article.

The basic weight loss equation and why NutriSystem takes it further: Everyone knows this, but it bears repeating. If you repeatedly take in fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. This equation has been around since the beginning of time and is very simple. However, its simplicity does not ensure that we are more successful at it. As a population, we’re fatter today than ever – so maybe it’s not that easy.

Nutrisystem takes this a little further by putting ketosis into the equation. Basically, carbohydrates and proteins work too. In this way, this type of diet works from low calorie and high protein foods. The diet is designed to be low in calories and carbohydrates, but low in protein. It sounds very basic, but it actually makes your body burn fat much faster. The reason for this is that you are no longer giving it the carbohydrates it is using to burn. So instead, it should depend on your fat stores.

Any diet we compare to the Nutrisystem is able to put your body in ketosis, if you’re getting similar results. So, I’m going to look at lean cuisine in terms of nutrition, calories, fiber and carbohydrates. In order to compare apples to apples, I’m going to compare two types of food – Nutrisystems and Lean Cuisine Pizza – both of which are popular items.

Straight Food Pizza Nutrition Information: This product has 320 calories, and 80 of them come from fat. In total, it contains 9 grams of fat. Contains 17 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. The most troubling thing for me here is the carbs involved. There are 42 at large. I highly doubt that even a few of these meals a day will get you into ketosis. And, if you limit yourself to one, you still need to be careful the rest of the day, especially if you’re preparing the food yourself.

Nutrisystem Pizza Nutritional Information: This item has only 250 calories, 70 of which come from fat. Contains 8 grams of fat. Contains 11 grams of protein. However, there are only 28 grams of carbohydrates. It’s 14 less and it can make a big difference over time. You’re also saving 70 calories which can add up too.

Another thing to consider with Nutrisystem is that you don’t have to be careful or conscious about what you eat for the rest of the day. They will balance the meals for you so that you don’t eat more than about 1200 calories a day and take in a low amount of carbohydrates and a high amount of protein so that you are in ketosis. They provide food for you (three meals, a snack and dessert.) Dinner options (like pizza) are high in calories and carbs. But lunch and breakfast are light on both of them. The whole thing is designed to give you the nutrients you need while making sure you approach both equations correctly.

Testing the effectiveness of a diet: If you’re still not sure which route to go, you can get ketone strips at most drugstores. These will tell you if you are in or approaching ketosis. You can do this after a week or straight after eating to see what happens. I suspect those extra carbs and calories add up after a week, but see for yourself. I can tell you from experience that a week of this diet will keep you in this place as long as you follow the instructions.
