Lose Weight with the Semolina Diet
Most weight loss plans are difficult precisely because they involve dieting — and depending on the psychological issues at the root of your weight gain in the first place, this can be especially challenging. Even though you are mentally committed to the idea of losing weight, you may be rebellious. You may find that feelings of deprivation turn you toward other self-destructive behaviors, such as smoking or drinking alcohol. If this describes you, you may benefit from counseling to help you deal with your weight problems and other issues underlying your weight problems.
In the meantime, eating plans that promise to help you lose weight by adding something instead of taking away food may appeal to you and actually work much better. This may seem counter-intuitive in a way, since losing weight always requires eating less. There are some exceptions though. One of them is a time-honored method that includes a meal of semolina — a cooked grain, similar to cream of wheat — three times a day. The argument is that eating 300 grams of boiled semolina three times a day will make you too full to eat other foods. Your other food intake will decrease and you will lose weight.
This method is somewhat controversial and may work well as a temporary, transitional method. For one thing, advocates of low-carb, high-protein eating will cringe at this plan. Dr. Atkins himself was rolling in his grave! Semolina is a high-carb, high-glycemic index food — it’s pure starch. Also, eating more of it makes you less appetizing for all other foods, including protein. Proponents of Atkins and other high protein plans say this is the worst thing you can do to your body. Of course, we must remember that the high-protein approach is controversial. From a nutritionist’s point of view, a high protein or semolina plan is not ideal. However, most nutritionists’ food guides put whole grains at the top of the chart, so the semolina plan sticks more closely to the standard food guide as long as you try to eat enough fruits, vegetables, and protein to stay balanced.
And if you do, it almost automatically eliminates junk food and empty calories. Few of us are able to eat 300 grams of semolina three times a day and plenty of fruits, vegetables and protein, and still eat high-calorie or fatty foods. In a sense, semolina replaces other ’empty’ calories that many of us (if we have a weight problem) eat as a regular part of our diet. Eating semolina may not represent optimal nutrition – but eating foods full of fat and additives like potato chips, chocolate or candy is worth it. Of course, the semolina diet doesn’t ban any of these junk foods — it just means you eat a certain amount of semolina per day and make sure you’re getting enough vitamins and protein in your diet. Most people then automatically get rid of a lot of junk food because we just don’t have room for it.
Semolina isn’t really that bad as a consistent food unless you subscribe to the ‘low carb’ philosophy (in which case, you never chose this food to begin with!). It is low in fat, it is a natural food, and like other grains, it is rich in vitamins and minerals. If eating carbs is your priority – and many of us gain weight by eating large amounts of pasta or bread – then semolina will satisfy you. You are less likely to crave other carbohydrate-rich foods. Also, consider the fact that the semolina plan is actually similar to the way many traditional cultures eat. In traditional Asian cuisine, for example, rice is a staple, eaten at most meals. In some European cultures, porridge (oats) has the same function. Even though these diets are not balanced for us today, they kept people alive – and in a healthy weight range – for millennia!
