Slider Foods Spell Weight Regain For Weight Loss Surgery Patients
Eating sliders is fine for most people. Popularized by the American food chain, White Castle, a slider (originally slider) is a miniature grilled hamburger or cheeseburger on a steamed bun, often served with onion and dill pickles and other condiments. They originally sold a piece for a nickel in the 1940s, making it affordable to add a portion of fries for just pennies. By all accounts this is the best kind of “slider” food.
Slider diets for weight loss surgery patients are well-intentioned and ignorant taboos that often lead to dumping syndrome, weight loss plateaus, and ultimately weight gain. Slider foods, for weight loss surgery patients, are bland simple processed carbohydrates of little or no nutritional value that slide through the surgical stomach pouch without providing nutrition or satiety. The most innocent of slider foods are saltine crackers, usually eaten with warm tea or other beverages, to soothe the stomach when sick or recovering from surgery.
Commonly consumed slider foods include pretzels, crackers (saltines, graham, ritz, etc.) filled cracker snacks such as Ritz Bits, popcorn, cheese snacks (Cheetos) or cheese crackers, tortilla chips with salsa, potato chips, sugar-free cookies, cakes, and candy. These slider foods are often salty and cause dry mouth so they should be consumed with liquid to keep them palatable. That’s how they become slider foods. They often have no nutritional value.
The digestive process for weight loss surgery patients is different from that of those who have not undergone gastric surgery. When a slider eats foods they go into the stomach pouch and exit directly into the jejunum, where the simple carbohydrate slurry is quickly absorbed and stored by the body. Digestion of simple carbohydrates has less thermic effect than digestion of protein, so less metabolic energy is expended. In most cases patients experience a weight loss plateau and possibly a regression of weight gain during the weight loss phase of eating slider diets. And sadly, they begin to believe that their surgical stomach pouch is not working properly because they never feel the fullness or restriction that they feel when eating protein.
The nature of a surgical gastric pouch causes feelings of tightness or restriction when eating enough food. However, this stiffness or restriction is not affected when soft simple carbohydrates are consumed and one can continue to eat immeasurable, abundantly non-nutritious foods without ever feeling discomfort.
Many patients turn to slider diets for this reason. They don’t like the discomfort caused by pouch filling from eating a measured portion of live animal or dairy protein without fluids. Yet this restriction is the desired outcome of surgery. Discomfort is intended to indicate cessation of eating. It is important to remember the “protein first” rule for weight management with bariatric surgery.
Patients with gastric bypass, gastric banding (lap-band) and gastric sleeve are recommended to follow a high protein diet to treat and promote weight loss. Bariatric centers often advise weight loss surgery patients of the “Four Rules,” the most important of which is “Protein First.” This means that of all nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat and alcohol) the patient should eat protein first.
Protein is not always the most comfortable food choice for weight loss surgery patients who feel restricted after eating small amounts of food. However, a protein-rich and low-carbohydrate slider diet should be observed for the surgical device to function properly. A high protein diet should be followed even after achieving a healthy body weight to maintain a healthy weight and avoid weight regain.
