Choosing to lose weight by leading an active lifestyle and eating natural healthy foods can be difficult enough but if your partner doesn’t support you in this transition, it makes things 10 times harder.

They may say they support you but when it comes down to it, it feels like they are waiting for you to fail…

“A small slice of pizza won’t hurt you.”

“You deserve a reward; I bought you your favorite ice cream.”

“I can’t eat all this chocolate by myself; just have a couple of mouthfuls.”

“Every time you fail what do you think you can do to lose weight this time.”

“I don’t want to eat this healthy garbage, where’s my fried chicken.”

Don’t fall into a sulking routine; If your partner wants to eat it, only they are capable enough to do so.

Losing weight can definitely change the dynamics of your relationship, your partner may start to feel threatened because you’re no longer overweight (or pampered!) and people may start looking at you differently.

Your partner may not like change and this can cause problems if you try to introduce them to a new healthy lifestyle. In return they try to sabotage your efforts by eating unhealthy foods in front of you and generally want you to fail; Not out of hate but really out of fear.

The thought of this might put you off wanting to try it outright but here you have to be strong. The only person you can change is yourself, because no one else can make your decision to get healthy It’s your body and you own it.

If the They are Want to lead an unhealthy life, no matter what you do, you can’t change them any more than they can change you. So I’m afraid it’s time to start thinking about yourself and what you want and need.

Consider what you want, you have to understand that you still love and respect your partner but it’s all about you now!!

And remember this; It’s not selfish, it’s just plain sensible.

You need to realize that it’s okay to be two separate people in a relationship and you don’t have to follow and do everything your partner does and vice versa.

Talk to your partner about how they’re treating you and making you feel, letting them know you’d like some support even if they’re not ready to join you on your healthy journey. Explain that even though there are changes in your body, there are no changes in the way you feel about them, and reassure them that they have nothing to lose by helping them stay on your weight loss plan.

Ask them to stop eating unhealthy food in front of you, if they have to eat at home they can eat in the kitchen or away from you. You need to say, “I really need to avoid unhealthy foods if I’m going to make the changes I need, so please stop giving them to me.”

When you go grocery shopping, your partner won’t throw unhealthy food into the shopping cart so go on your own. If they insist on coming with you, make sure you have a list prepared for you. These are your foods that you will eat for the week.

A great technique my clients use with their partners (and children) is that she prepares all the food herself, which gives her control over what goes into each dish. She doesn’t let others know that cottage pie has vegetables in its pasta sauce or turkey mince instead of ground beef. By doing this one will be able to prepare and cook foods in a healthy manner without others knowing. Sure they really enjoy the food and are getting more nutrients and less fat!

Schedule them first thing in the morning with your workouts, or if you find this difficult choose an evening when your partner’s favorite TV shows are on. Arrange to meet a friend at the gym, lock yourself in another room with your iPod pumping for a home workout, or go for a power walk. It will keep your partner occupied while you have some down time and really get stuck into your weight loss plan.

This action plan may seem very tough but you have to choose a healthy lifestyle for yourself and not your partner or anyone else! It takes discipline, love and commitment on your part but you have to be strong and constantly tell yourself…
