If we have a family history of diabetes, juicing may not be a good option. Juicing only fruit produces a drink high in calories because it contains more sugar, mainly fructose. Drinking fruit juice also increases our blood sugar.

When we combine fruits and vegetables, we reduce the sugar concentration, but it’s not just about the sugar. It is also about the balance of other minerals in the juice. If we choose the wrong fruits or vegetables, our body will tend to react to a certain excess mineral. Minerals commonly found in fruits include potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. Potassium and calcium contribute to heart health.

Anyone with heart problems should consult a doctor before consuming a juice-only diet. As mentioned earlier, a juice-only diet can do more harm than good. Take calcium as an example. Excessive intake of calcium can lead to kidney stones.

In juicing we consider the freshness of fruits and vegetables. Some devotees say that juicing enhances the freshness of fruits and vegetables. This claim is not true, because like a freshly cut fruit, its open area is exposed to air, which causes it to brown. That area undergoes a chemical change, that is, it is not as fresh as before.

Juicing in moderation is recommended as a part of the daily diet. It is good if we are not in the habit of eating fruits with many seeds or we do not like the taste of certain vegetables. We can choose to add honey or fruit juice to the vegetable mixture.

The juice is not harmful. It helps busy people save time. More health-conscious individuals can opt for a blend. In terms of keeping ingredients fresh, we may want to look at different types of juicers. While it’s true that slow juicers are able to produce juices that stay fresh longer than normal, nothing replaces eating whole fruits and vegetables.
