Avoid Junk Food or Eat Healthier Junk Foods?

As a fitness professional, I’m always amazed (and confused) by how conflicted people seem to be with losing weight, yet they refuse to stop eating junk food. One interesting thing I’ve noticed in my many years helping people lose weight is that almost every person who tells me they’re “trying” to lose weight always has their house full of all kinds of junk food instead of whole. Natural, unprocessed food.

It’s not unusual for people to tell me they’re really trying to lose weight, but I still notice apple jacks and boxes of fruit balls, cakes, candies and chips on their counters and sodas or syrupy juices in their cupboards. In their refrigerator.

So the question that always bothers me is, if all these people genuinely want to lose weight, why are so many people in the world filling their homes with junk food instead of healthy food?

Interestingly, the answer is usually that they don’t want to give up their favorite food because they think they can “live a little” by eating this junk food… if you ask me, that sounds like dying a little with everyone. Bite!

My point is that eating junk foods has nothing to do with enjoying your life… In reality, when you give up junk foods you actually enjoy life more because you feel better and have more energy every day. Additionally, getting in better shape by not eating junk food will obviously help improve your body image (and therefore boost your confidence), so you can enjoy life even more.

One thing that many people fail to realize is that eating healthy does not mean eating bland and boring food. Instead, when you learn to enjoy natural unprocessed foods and begin to explore all the natural food varieties this planet has to offer us, you can enjoy the natural flavors of real food more than the over-processed aggressive flavors that are so common. With excessively sweet and salty junk food.

An example of this is the other day when I was on the road and wanted unsweetened iced tea, but the store only had bottles of heavily sweetened iced tea available. Well, I probably haven’t bought a fully sweetened iced tea in a few years…I’m used to drinking really unsweetened iced tea and have learned to appreciate the natural taste of tea without the need for sugar or other sweeteners.

When I drank this bottle of sweet tea, I almost gagged because it was so syrupy sweet, it was absolutely disgusting.

Same example… I used to need a lot of sugar in my coffee, but after I slowly reduced the amount of sugar I use in my coffee, I can now drink black coffee and enjoy its natural flavor without the need for sweeteners (although I rarely drink coffee).

These are just a couple of examples of how once you start appreciating the natural flavors of real food, you no longer need the super-offensive salt, sugar or artificial flavors ingrained in us by food companies and all. The junk food they push on us.

I believe that everyone should really enjoy what they eat and can do so without eating highly processed junk food… In fact, many foods that people think of as junk food, I am often surprised to hear that there are healthy alternatives. He never thought that.

Some examples:

Junk food: A chocolate candy bar, chocolate donut or piece of chocolate cake

A healthy alternative: A couple of pieces of extra dark chocolate (more than 70-75% cocoa content only)…it’s higher in fiber and lower in sugar than milk chocolate or dark chocolates with less than 70% cocoa content.

Junk food: Deep fried and breaded chicken fingers and fries on the side (loads of nasty trans fats)

A healthy alternative: Baked chicken breast strips with peanut dipping sauce and vegetables on the side

Junk food: A cheap fast-food burger on a refined refined white bun

A healthy alternative: Grass-fed burger with raw grass-fed cheese on a sprouted grain roll (high in CLA and omega-3 fats)

How to eat healthy and still very tasty!

What I hope you get from this article is that there is more to life than eating junk food, and eating junk doesn’t mean you “live a little.” Instead, I think the opposite is true.

Eat healthy and discover the natural flavors of real foods (not processed) and you’ll soon find that you don’t need junk food anymore. Enjoy!
