Cat Illnesses – Caring for the Older Cat
Cat diseases are not always easy to identify. Animals cannot tell where they hurt or what their symptoms are. As owners it is our responsibility to keep a careful eye on our pets and spot the signs that they may be in trouble.
Monitoring is even more important as your cat ages. Cats like humans are living longer these days and many reach their late teens or early twenties. With older cats, it’s worth taking them to your vet for a checkup every year.
As they age, just like us, they begin to show signs of wear and tear. You will often find that they don’t eat as much as they used to. It is usually worth changing their eating pattern and feed them 3 or 4 small meals a day rather than the two large meals they ate as younger cats.
As your cat ages it is normal for them to slow down and become less athletic. It is a natural result of the aging process itself. However, there are signs you should look for in your older cat. The first signs of cat diseases are bad breath, which may indicate dental problems or the onset of kidney problems. Cats are prone to kidney failure and it is one of the most common causes of death in cats. A cat can lose up to 70% of its kidney function before any symptoms appear.
It is also important to monitor how much older cats eat and drink. Loss of appetite may indicate dental problems or progressive kidney failure. Another sign of a kidney problem is if your cat seems to have increased thirst and is drinking more water than they used to. There are now cat foods developed specifically for older cats and you may consider switching to one of these.
With older cats you should physically check them periodically for signs of swelling or weight loss. Any of these could indicate a problem such as a tumor and in this case you should contact your vet.
No one knows your cat better than you and you should be able to spot any sign of feline ailments through inspection and observation. It is also important to keep your cats vaccinated and up-to-date on vaccines as older cats may be more vulnerable to infection.
