Eat protein…

First thing in the morning. After a good night’s rest, your body is in a catabolic state. This means that because your glycogen storage is low, your body is burning muscle for energy. So, just before brushing your teeth, eat a digestible protein like whey protein first thing in the morning so your muscles don’t break down or catabolise.

Between meals. This is to keep protein flowing into your bloodstream to continuously feed your muscles throughout the day, you can take casein protein between meals. Casein protein is slowly digested as it continues to release protein into the bloodstream to nourish the muscles between meals. This way your muscles get protein throughout the day.

Before/After a workout at the gym. Eating fast to digest protein, such as whey protein before a workout, will promote muscle growth as you work out. Eating whey and some carbohydrates after your workout will repair the muscles you’ve worked out.

Before going to bed. Building muscle is at its best when you sleep. And because you’ll be without food for so many hours, you need to encourage muscle growth by eating casein protein before bed. As stated earlier, casein protein is slow to digest and will constantly fuel your muscles for up to 7 hours while you sleep, thus encouraging muscle growth.
