Things like pies, chips, donuts, tortilla chips, etc. These are foods that everyone agrees are fattening and are not the best foods to eat. Now, what do all these things have in common?

Every type of junk food is high in carbohydrates and fat, as well as low in protein. This combination high in carbohydrates and fat is junk food. When it comes to losing weight, nearly all dieters avoid or reduce foods with this combination high in carbohydrates and fat. That’s why all diets are low in fat, low in carbohydrates, or low in calories.

If you choose to go the low-calorie route, it can get tricky. The idea here is to eat fewer calories than you expend. The only problem? It’s virtually impossible to know for sure how many calories you’re taking in, or how many you’re consuming.

For example, you can go through all sorts of charts to find out how many calories are in a medium banana. But what is a “medium” banana? If you see two bananas and one is bigger than the other, which one is “average?” And how ripe is the banana? As bananas ripen, they get a higher sugar content, which changes your calorie count. So what is the mean?

You can also look at fancy graphs to tell you how many calories you burn when you walk, run, or engage in other physical activity. The only problem? People of different weights and different intensity levels will have different calorie expenditure. So what is the mean?

This doesn’t even take into account the issue of how the human body tends to conserve energy. Since body fat is a form of stored energy, the body tends to store body fat when calorie counts get too low.

The specific mechanics of this are beyond the scope of this article, but the point is this: low-calorie diets seem to make sense, but they don’t always work and are very difficult to actually follow. Of course, they are not simple.

For a simple diet plan, low-fat or low-carb is the way to go. Personally, I have found that low-carb is far superior to low-fat, as our body’s mechanism for storing body fat is activated by eating carbohydrates, but not eating fat in the diet.

It may seem counterintuitive, but it’s the way our bodies work. The big benefit of low-carb eating is that it can be a very, very simple weight loss plan and an easy way to eat. Calories are usually not counted and little or no grams of protein, fat, or even carbohydrates are counted.

It just depends on the low-carb diet you follow. But whether it’s low-carb or low-fat, for a simple diet plan, these are the ways to go.
