Electric Vehicle Challenges For Wide Adoption
It’s nice to see a Tesla car hurtling down the road and know it’s all electric, however, the industry has a ways to go before electric cars can be competitively priced for consumers – before to complete the construction. Trust me when I tell you that I’m not against EVs, but I see a lot of challenges – cost, weight, support, capability, range, charging infrastructure, etc. ‘road to hell’ with Good Intentions Paving Company LLC. Well, let’s talk shall we?
Here are five points about the future of electric cars and the real challenges facing the industry:
1). Current battery weight: EV batteries add a lot to the weight of the vehicle – proponents say that’s okay because new lightweight devices will reduce weight. It is true that if these light vehicles can do it, they can also do it with gasoline, diesel, natural gas, hydrogen or steam. It means more competition, A 100 mpg car because of the low weight is a big selling point.
2). End-of-life battery disposal: Where do all those batteries with their environmentally unfriendly chemicals go? His supporters say; it’s not that important. However, if old cell phones are considered hazardous waste because of the batteries in them, car batteries that are larger with multiple devices are even more of a problem.
3). Slow growth: Currently electric cars make up a small part of our total, so there is no real change in the use of fossil fuels, so if that is the goal, it will take decades it is catching up and needs government intervention – Hasn’t the government intervened in the free market recently (Healthcare, biofuels for example) and how has that worked for us?
4). Electric vehicle rebates: When governments give rebates, we all end up with higher taxes. If the EV costs about $10,000, and we’re giving a rebate, we’re funding one platform over another, picking and choosing the winners. It is wiser to let the EV industry grow and find ways to lower prices to compete.
5). Electric cars are quiet: Proponents say that’s a good thing. But, tell that to the kid or the bicyclist who didn’t hear them coming and got hit. Some EVs now have a “sound” to alert people to come, and you can choose the sound you want, several options. That’s cool, but it defeats the concept and/or the benefits of EV-related stability. Sound also requires energy to make, ask any audio installer for a car audio system, usually a battery or a second battery is added for larger systems.
The electric vehicle industry must solve these challenges before full consumer purchase or before EVs can replace the cars we drive today. Please consider this.
