Healthy Eating For Children

We are all bombarded with news, hype and controversy straight out of food. Everyone is an expert, and everyone has a theory.

Today we are told that everything we have been taught about our food and our children is wrong. We are told, for example, that the average Western diet of 40 percent carbohydrates, 40 percent fat, and 20 percent protein is at the heart, if you’ll excuse me, of the matter. For some people, a diet high in complex carbohydrates is fine; for others it causes problems. Some people need (and can tolerate) higher amounts of fat and protein.

So who is right? It’s hard to say. All we know is that all experts are recommending, to one degree or another, that we drastically change the way we eat.

It’s all very difficult because what we eat is very much a function of our culture and sense of self. Advertisements for the latest fast food (some say “fatty food”) hamburger joints show us. We are told to drink a lot of milk. We were taught that the last supper was steak and lobster. We are tempted by television commercials to buy processed foods that are often high in salt and low in fiber.

On the other hand, there are those who will accuse low or low-fat advocates of developing dry and tasteless food that can be mistaken for dog treats. Why? Because we have become so used to fat, sugar and salt being the most important part of our diet.

There are thousands of food-related issues that concern us all, from taste to calories. However, two outcomes of healthy eating stand out: health and weight (not necessarily in that order). These are related, although perhaps not as directly as it may seem.

It’s no wonder obesity is so prevalent in Western culture, especially among children. With our culture’s strong association between inactivity and luxury, along with our cherished nutritional values, the only real wonder is that more people are not fat. Have you heard that it is difficult for American tourists to get into Japanese bus seats?

Like adults, children need to eat a variety of foods from different food groups to get all the nutrients they need for good growth and health. And don’t forget: your child’s eating habits are influenced by your child’s eating habits and you can help develop healthy eating habits by keeping a variety of foods in the form your child likes.

Here are some tips to help you and your child lead a healthier life:

  • Make a list of all the healthy foods that your child wants to eat and buy them. You eat the food in your hand. You can make extra large soups or stews and save the leftovers for another day.
  • Don’t think of healthy eating as a “diet.” Nature wants you to eat whole, unprocessed foods. Healthy eating is a decision and lifestyle.
  • Avoid foods that are labeled as “diet” or “fat-free.” They may contain artificial ingredients. Get real food.
  • Prepare food in advance. Don’t get yourself into a situation where you don’t have the time, energy or ability to feed your child healthy food.
  • Don’t let your child eat because they are bored, sad, lonely, low on energy, angry, busy or wanting a taste. Do not use food as medicine; Some people use food to keep themselves from feeling down because they don’t have the energy to change. Sugar, wheat, aspartame, caffeine and other food ingredients are highly addictive.

Identify the worst foods your child is currently eating and decide to eliminate them, one per week, until you replace most of the unhealthy options with healthy options. Once you start eating healthy on a regular basis, it will be easier to continue eating healthy. You will want healthy food and a beautiful salad will make your mouth water. They say it takes 21 days to break a bad habit and 40 days to completely change that bad habit into a good one, so if you’ve been eating healthy for over a month, you can continue eating healthy for your life if you choose. Set intermediate goals such as “no grains for three weeks” or “no sugary drinks for three weeks.”
