The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook Review

The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook by Lyle McDonald has become quite popular on the internet so I decided to do a little review on it and put in my 2 cents. If you read the title “Quick Weight Loss Guide” you’d be right if you thought the book was about quick weight loss.

The book is about crash dieting your way to weight and fat loss. This can be very unhealthy, both physically and mentally and I’m glad that Lyle warns his readers at the beginning of the book. If it wasn’t for the fact that he keeps warning about crash dieting as a long-term fat loss plan during the book, I would have considered the book to be dangerously misleading.

His goal in this book is to teach his readers how to remove food in a way that does not adversely affect the health of the eater. I like to talk about the difference between weight loss and fat loss because everyone seems to get hung up on losing weight without realizing that weight loss doesn’t always mean fat loss. Depending on how you lose this weight, it may include losing fat, water, or muscle. And neither leads to a more attractive appearance.

The theory behind the book is based on the “protein-sparing modified fast” recommended by surgeons to patients who needed to lose weight quickly before surgery. Surprisingly, the manual has good advice on how to control the consumption of such snacks safe and sound. He advises not to do heavy exercise until you are back on a normal diet, and if you haven’t been exercising, he advises you not to start exercising until after the diet is complete. These crash foods can make the body miserable and therefore hard work of any kind is contraindicated.

He repeatedly reminds the reader that fasting should be done as described in the book and that one should not stop for long periods of time on solid food because of the health consequences of doing so. What I found admirable was that he talked about the “rebound” or “yo-yo” effect that dieting can have. Most authors of “crash diet” type books do not.

So it seems that many people regain the weight after going off these types of foods. In the book Lyle discusses how to return to a more normal eating pattern while still maintaining the lost fat and weight.

Overall I think it’s a good read but when it comes down to it. The best fat loss program is one that lasts for the long term and one that empowers you to not only feel good about your body but also feel good inside. The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook is not that program.

Having said that it is a good read and for those few people who need this type of resource (athletes who want to lose weight, women who want to lose weight before the wedding) and are willing to do it right, this is a good book.

I must say that I am moving forward with caution. Most people are interested in a quick fix at the expense of their health. People who don’t exercise moderation and don’t follow Lyle’s instructions in the quick weight loss manual can end up in sticky waters when it comes to their health.
