Weight Loss Problem – Portion Distortion

Have you noticed that the amount of food considered a normal serving has increased in recent years?

Everything comes in ever-larger packs, and marketing offers entice us to buy (and eat) even more with “extra 30% free” or “two for the price of one.” We are served far more in restaurants than we need and are continually encouraged to “supersize” our meals or work our way through “all you can eat”.

A standard bagel from 20 years ago was 3 inches in diameter and 140 calories. The norm has now increased to 6 inches and 350 button-clicking calories. (And when have you ever eaten half a bagel and saved the rest for later?) To burn up those extra calories you’d need to jog for 20+ minutes. When you factor in all the extra calories you now consume in a day through larger portions, you’d never be able to get enough activity to consume them all.

The result? You may be eating more than you think and struggle to lose weight simply because of the size of your portions.

So what can you do to avoid falling prey to Portion Distortion?

1. Measure your food

Weigh and measure everything for a while to get an idea of ​​how much you’re eating. While counting calories in the long run is tedious, it’s good to have a general understanding of how many calories are in normal portions. You’ll be horrified at how many are in that piece of cheese that you might think of as “just a snack”! Where it’s not possible to weigh food (e.g. when dining out) learn to judge a normal portion size. For example, a serving of pasta, rice, grains and potatoes should be the size of a small fist, and a regular serving of meat, chicken or fish is the size of a deck of cards.

2. Buy smaller portions

Buy the smallest portions you can get. Nothing is good value if it ends up in your mouth and on your sides. Only exception? Fruits and vegetables: take advantage of all the offers on these. If you have to eat at a fast food restaurant try kids meals (the very one!). Buy the smallest low-fat latte at the bar, etc. Share with a mate wherever you can. Consider ordering two appetizers rather than an appetizer and main course at a restaurant, and don’t feel like you have to finish everything you ordered if you don’t need to. Better in the trash or in the dog than gaining your weight.

3. Read labels

Read the nutrition panels on food packaging and look for the correct serving size. This is rarely the whole container (or even half), so watch out!

4. Out of sight

Practice portion control at home by serving food in the kitchen and putting leftovers away before sitting down. If you decide to have a TV snack, put a small portion on a plate and take it to the room where you watch TV. Taking the whole package is fatal!

5. Choose quality over quantity

Buy the highest quality in small quantities rather than a mega pack of cheap food. And remember that the quality of a meal doesn’t just depend on what you eat. Presents food well. Set the table and sit down to eat. Take the time to enjoy the food and the company you have.

6. Use the built-in hunger meter

Eat slowly enough to notice when you’ve satisfied your hunger and stop at that point, no matter how much is left on your plate or how much is left in the pan or package.

Starting today, start being aware of how much you’re eating and what you’re eating. Notice how food manufacturers and restaurants subtly persuade you to eat more and decide not to let it get in the way of your weight loss efforts. Think about how much less you could eat and still be satisfied. This could be all you need to do to lose the weight you want!
