The Secret to Nutrisystem Weight Loss
I imagine if you look at it in terms of pounds lost, smaller clothes worn, and lifestyle changes, most would consider my Nutrisystem journey a success. I lost most of the weight I wanted to lose and kept it off. And I’m reasonably confident that I’ll be able to maintain it and not gain weight back. I also look at food in a much healthier and less obsessive way.
So the other day, a colleague asked me what my secret was. Because he knew someone else who had followed this diet and who hadn’t had the same kind of lasting success. I think she suspected I was skipping meals or not adding side dishes to each meal or exercising in a dangerous or unhealthy way. None of these things were true. There may be a few things that have contributed to my success. I’ll let you decide if you want to call them “secret” or not. But I will share them in the following article.
Is “the friendly glycemic index” the secret of Nutrisystem?: Most experts will tell you that this diet is mostly effective because the ratio of carbohydrates to calories and protein of the foods they give you is such that it encourages ketosis. This causes your body to burn more fat for fuel since it doesn’t have free rein on the continuous carbohydrates (which you probably provided earlier).
Now, I will definitely admit that this definitely helps. I mean, less calories in and more calories burned or burnt is all very well and I know it works. But adding a little extra fat burner can only help and can sometimes offer faster and better results. This is always a good thing because it’s the results that make you want to keep going. Very few people will stick with the diet and hang on when they don’t get the results. So yes, glycemic consideration helps. And I strongly believe in it, so much so that in the initial stages of the diet I was never without ketone strips to make sure this diet did its job and got me into ketosis.
What I think is the real secret of Nutrisystem (and of those who lose a lot of weight on it 🙂 As I hope you can see, I really appreciate the low amount of carbs in these foods, but I think the real key to this diet lies a little deeper. I believe the real secret to success with this diet is that the manufacturer understands the psychological hurdles that dieters face. Society seems to really understand the realities that nobody wants to talk about.
What I mean by that is things like this: I’m inherently lazy. I don’t want to have to “work” too hard for results. Yes, I’m willing to change what I eat a little. I know I’m not going to eat my favorite meals every single day at every single meal. But I can’t deny that I want to enjoy what I’m eating. I want to be able to look forward to a meal every now and then. And I don’t want to be kept away from foods and sweets that I actually really like. I mean, I don’t want to have to say goodbye to burgers and chocolate cake forever.
I also don’t want to be a gourmet cook. It shouldn’t be hard to find foods that will help me lose weight. I remember trying to learn how to make a cheesecake with an almond crust for the Zone Diet. The cake was good but it took me about two hours to make and I knew when I was enjoying myself I would never make that effort again. Working that hard isn’t sustainable for any length of time.
The company seems to understand this as they do most of the work for you. They supply most of the foods you will consume. They have already counted the sugars, carbohydrates, proteins and calories. They have listed everything for you so you don’t have to guess when, how or what to eat. They provided free counseling that only requires you to log in to your computer or phone to use it. In short, they’ve anticipated every objection or difficulty you might have and eliminated or addressed it completely.
Finally, if I were to define what I do that I would classify as my “secrets” it would just be a few things. For me, the real key to this whole thing is choosing your foods well. (I always go with the custom package so I can hand-pick what I want.) I know that as long as I’m happily eating the foods, I won’t be tempted to abandon my regimen. And, sure, Nutrisystem pizza, burgers, and chocolate aren’t exactly what I’d eat off the diet, but they’re passable, tasteful, and mean my jeans keep getting smaller. I still purchase ketone strips because it lets me know I will be responsible when I cheat.
And it finally occurred to me that working out even just a little bit would make everything much faster. I will never love the gym and probably never will. So, I accept this about myself the same way I accept my being lazy in the kitchen. Instead, I just walk after dinner or walk home from my son’s school after dropping him off. It’s five miles and it was hard at first but now I really enjoy it and I re-upload my MP3 every weekend in anticipation of the week ahead.
