Burn Fats Fast – How to Rev Up Your Metabolic Rate to Help You Drop Unwanted Pounds Quickly!
You may be aware of the inverse relationship between decreased metabolism and increased body weight. One of the factors attributed to weight gain is the slowing of metabolism due to aging. What is metabolic rate and how does it affect your weight?
Before we get into the details, let’s look at some definitions:-
- Metabolism is defined as the rate at which the body produces and consumes energy and calories to sustain life;
- The resting or basal metabolic rate (BMR) measures the amount of energy required to support the body’s most basic functions when it is at rest.
You might be interested to note that the conversion of food into energy and your body’s use of that energy (your metabolism) plays a key role in weight control. If you overconsume producing more energy than your body needs, those extra calories get stored in your body and result in weight gain.
When your birthdays start adding up, especially for women, you’ll experience a drop in your metabolic rate. Put another way, for example, if a moderately active 35-year-old woman eats X number of calories a day to maintain a 140-pound frame, she could gain weight eating X number of calories by the time she reaches age 45. For some people, the gain can be gradual and small and it’s not until you realize you can’t fit into those skinny jeans anymore. Assuming you put on 0.5kg a year, it all adds up after say 10 years. In reality, metabolic rate differs between genders and individuals and some people may gain more weight than others and if you don’t do something about it, it may be too late because you’ll probably have put on a huge number of pounds by then!
The only way to keep unwanted pounds off—that is, burn calories beyond your BMR—is to incorporate consistent, regular exercise into your lifestyle to counteract the effects of the decreased metabolism that occurs as you enter middle age. Some of you may have started to notice that the same workout plan that worked for you a couple of years ago hasn’t achieved the same results today. Likewise, you may also find that the exercise plan your friend has successfully used to shed those extra fats may not work for you. Metabolism is likely one of the underlying factors that caused the disparity
Another thing to note is that you start to lose your lean muscle mass as you age. Since muscles help burn those calories, a slower metabolism means you burn fewer calories. The amount of lean body mass you have is crucial in determining how quickly your body burns calories. Your metabolism decreases if your lean body mass decreases! In other words, every pound of lean muscle mass lost means fewer calories burned.
You may also have noticed that some women resort to crash dieting to quickly reach their weight loss goal. Fasting is often the preferred choice of many people trying to lose weight because the number one excuse for not exercising is: there’s no time! This may have worked well for some of you who may have tried crash dieting, but the older you get, the less effective it becomes because crash dieting will lead to loss of lean muscle mass along with fat.
What many people fail to realize is that if you try to lose weight by starving yourself, your body is getting signals that you are now in a “famine” mode. Your body will then react by conserving energy which leads to the slowing down of your metabolic rate. Once you return to your normal diet, you will also regain weight quickly as you lose it, especially as you get older, already faced with the natural tendency of a decreased metabolic rate coupled with a deliberate attempt to slow down your metabolism by opting for a crash diet.
You’ve probably discovered up to this point in your reading that building lean muscle mass is one of the ways to manage your weight. The more lean muscles you have, the more calories your body is able to burn. To achieve successful weight loss, you should aim to reduce your body fat mass and increase lean muscle mass. While we can’t turn back time or stop time, there are some things we can do to fire up our metabolism.
