Women – Fat and Weight Loss

For a good majority of women, fat and weight control issues have always been very important. Most eat and exercise to maintain a healthy weight. While some women find that staying fit comes naturally and they don’t have to work very hard, others find it quite difficult to shed a few unwanted pounds especially as they get older.

Body image, sexuality, and self-image are usually intricately intertwined for women. However, the perceptions that most women have of their own bodies and also the perceptions of those whose bodies they love have mostly been negatively affected by all sorts of social and marketing influences. The media today basically wants women to have lean, taut, hips-out, curvy, pubescent-girl bodies whose breasts should be appropriately perky and youthful with visible musculature. This is a very high claim to say the least, considering the age factor and the challenges of female hormones.

Sexual empowerment for men and women starts with high self-esteem and a positive body image. When a woman is comfortable with her appearance, size and shape, she is naturally more attuned to her senses and her sexuality takes on a whole new meaning and she is more willing to have sex, try new positions sexual ideas and techniques. Yet the degree to which women today stake their happiness, future, and/or sexuality on some fantastic weight loss or other personal physical “improvement” is daunting.

It is also interesting to note that while the anger felt by most women at being pressured by society to have perfect bodies is understandable, most women’s appearance is not only more closely scrutinized by other women, but often is unfairly criticized by women themselves. The problem is, most women can’t help but confront each other. It can undoubtedly be argued that most women dress for other women – although they dress to please men – it is what other women say that matters most to them. Men may compliment themselves more easily, but not so for women, who are in constant competition with each other to win the supposed “Miss Fit” contest. In fact, women are much more critical of their body shape and weight than men.

Why do women add more weight than men? A woman’s lifestyle (imbalanced diet and lack of exercise) and her female hormones are the main culprits when it comes to excess fat in women. Women seem to pay a much higher social price for their excess fat, while fat men somehow “get away with it.” Most fat men gain weight from overeating, but this isn’t always true for women. Of course, male hormones keep muscle mass up and fat levels down, but the opposite is apparently true for female hormones.

Food is made up of calories or units of energy. Physical activity and normal body metabolism burn calories. When a person takes in more calories than the body uses, the extra calories are stored as fat. These fat cells enlarge or decrease in size depending on the energy balance in the body. The metabolic pathways of female hormones favor the reduction of calories used in the generation of body heat and increase the storage of body fat by increasing the use of calories for fat production. In general, women’s metabolisms tend to turn more calories into fat, while men tend to produce more heat from calories. Thus women gain weight more easily than men and it is more difficult for them to lose fat.

Most women are actually the right size, but they are not satisfied with their shape because they compare themselves to women in the media. However, sometimes weight becomes a real physical, medical, emotional and/or psychological problem. A woman carrying around many extra pounds carries more weight than literal weight as she will be inclined to measure herself before any personal achievements, considering her weight a primary personal failure.

Actually, women should take a more retrospective look at their lifestyle and the question that is addressed to them by most of the media. The point is, much of women’s frustration with body fat is a mistake. The desire of those super thin female celebrities in magazines is based on a misunderstanding. Even a fit and healthy woman would have a hard time achieving the bodies of these young celebrities. When you factor in issues like pregnancy, motherhood, full-time careers, menopause, and aging in the life of an ordinary woman, these overhyped and media-hyped role models should truly fade into oblivion. Women are simply setting unattainable goals for themselves.

As women start to become more confident and take on a more positive attitude towards their bodies, they soon begin to realize how sexy they are and can be. The truth is that every woman definitely has positive qualities about her body, such as her beautiful feet, heavy breasts, long eyelashes, super shiny hair or gorgeous curves. Every woman is unique and while she might be busy looking down on some of your features, there are others who yearn to have them. Therefore it is better to be yourself, inside and out and be proud of your physical qualities, valuing and accentuating them as they are part of your overall sexuality.

However, it’s not about disregard for healthy standards. Being overweight can increase a woman’s risk of heart disease, breast cancer, and diabetes. It can also complicate pregnancy and can even make it more difficult to get pregnant. Long-term studies indicate that your overall risk of developing chronic disease is generally related to your Body Mass Index (BMI) as follows: BMI below 20 (may be associated with health problems for some women – eg infection); BMI 20-25 (the risk is very low – healthy weight); BMI 25-26.9 (the risk is starting to increase – zone of attention: overweight); BMI 27-29.9 (moderate risk – overweight); BMI 30+ (high risk – obese).

Your health risk is only partially determined by weight as there are other risk factors such as poor diet, alcohol, lack of exercise, smoking, high blood pressure and of course female hormones, all of which play an important role. However, in their desperate attempt to get rid of fat, some women resort to fasting or weird unbalanced diet gimmicks that simply make the problem worse.

There are many positive actions a woman can take to feel better about her weight, as taking care of her body will help her feel more attractive. If you feel your BMI needs to be reduced, especially for health reasons, eating a healthy, balanced diet to shed excess fat is a good start, and women in general should eat as much healthy food as possible. Routine aerobic exercise to improve the body’s ability to burn fat will also help reap the benefits of a healthier, happier, and better sex life.

Emotional health is the key to being beautiful. Therefore, pride and self-responsibility are prerequisites, if you are to establish and maintain weight control, a healthy exercise regimen, or some other physical routine. Starting a healthy balanced eating habit and adding exercise routines will make you feel good that you are taking positive steps towards getting a fitter, firmer and overall healthier body – all of which will make you feel better about showing it off .

However, women should be optimistic but realistic about the prospect of losing excess weight because the fatter a woman is, the less capable her body is of shedding fat from fat cells; preventing calories from entering fat cells and burning fat for calories. Consequently, the fatter she is, the less she manages to get rid of the fat. The fatter and more out of shape a woman is, the slower her fat loss becomes. Prevention, they say, is better than cure.

Whether you are curvy, delicate, muscular, skinny or plump, your body type is part of your sexuality. So start with a healthy, balanced diet and routine exercise regimen because the sexiest women are the ones who are most comfortable in their own skin.
