What Are the Main Causes of Obesity in Adult Women?

Have you ever wondered what are the main causes of obesity in women?

Maybe as a teenager you were able to eat whatever you wanted without gaining weight, but now that you’re 30 to 40 years old it seems all you have to do is look at your food and gain weight. It seems so unfair. And yes, it’s true, younger women are less likely to be overweight than adult women.

But what are the main causes of obesity in women?

Well, there are several factors that contribute to the likelihood of obesity in adult women, all of which are relatively easy to address once you understand them. The major causes of obesity in women include;

  • Hormonal effects.
  • Increased metabolic efficiency after childbirth.
  • Changing eating habits.
  • Reduce activity levels.
  • Stop smoking

Let’s examine each of these more closely.

Hormonal effects: Hormones affect virtually every area of our lives, both physical and emotional. Hormonal imbalances contribute significantly to water retention rates, which of course means that middle-aged women approaching menopause are more likely to carry excess fluids. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels are lower in obese individuals, HGH also increases the rate at which we burn calories (leaving fewer calories to convert to fat). Also, the hormone estrogen helps determine the distribution of body fat. Scientific studies indicate that younger women who have higher estrogen levels tend to carry excess weight around the buttocks, hips and thighs (pear shape). Whereas menopausal and postmenopausal women who have lower estrogen levels tend to have higher percentages of abdominal fat (apple shaped figure). Unfortunately, belly fat is a higher risk factor for some serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, type 2 (onset) diabetes, and even some forms of arthritis.

Increased metabolic efficiency after childbirth: One of the most potent factors contributing to female obesity is the increase in metabolic efficiency caused by pregnancy and childbirth. Women who have never had children are more likely to have inefficient metabolisms, meaning that many of the calories eaten go unused by the body, this is one reason why people can eat consistently without gaining weight. Unfortunately, pregnancy often puts an end to all of this. Pregnancy pushes the body into high gear. Suddenly, the food we consume has to provide for two people instead of just one. It then forces the body to become more efficient at extracting calories from the food we consume. After giving birth, the body slows down a bit, but it rarely returns to pre-pregnancy levels. This means we waste less calories which in turn can contribute to the accumulation of excess fat.

Changing eating habits: As pregnancy progresses, a woman’s calorie intake tends to increase. The reason for this is obvious, the growing fetus requires more nutrients than the mother’s diet provides, so the appetite increases accordingly. Eating more food slightly increases the size of the stomach, which means it requires a little more food to fill it. More food means more calories of course. After childbirth and breastfeeding have ceased, if food intake doesn’t decrease, those extra calories can contribute to further fat accumulation. So it is wise to reduce your food intake slightly to allow the stomach to shrink again.

Reduce activity levels: Young women tend to be more active than older women. They will go out dancing and partying all weekend, they will not think about sleeping only three or four hours a night, etc. Motherhood seriously affects capacity, so lead such a social life so mothers become less physically active. As children mature into their teens, their mother’s energy levels tend to decline, so the level of activity that was possible when she was in her 20s is no longer possible and then as they mature further health problems contribute to a further slowing down of physical activity . This trend towards an increasingly sedentary lifestyle is another contributing factor to obesity.

Stop smoking: While certainly not exclusive to women, this can be a huge contributing factor and is therefore worth mentioning. Quitting smoking can cause significant weight gain. The reason for this is quite simple. Smoking is a daily habit. Very few melee habits are available. In fact, besides smoking, there are only two… eat and drink! It is natural for a person who quits smoking to have a deep psychological need for that hand-to-hand action. Unfortunately, the most common habit is eating and more specifically snacking…usually with unhealthy foods such as cakes, candies, sweets etc. Is it any wonder that there is a drop in weight?

Thankfully, understanding this makes it possible to avoid the trend. There are things that will satisfy the hand-to-mouth habit without causing weight gain. These things include;

  • Sugar-free gum and candies
  • Always keep a glass of water on hand – take water instead of food!
  • Suck on a stick of ice cream or a toothpick

There are many other factors that contribute to obesity in mature women as this list is certainly not exhaustive. However, this article was designed to provide a basic examination of some of the leading causes of obesity in women.
