Insight Into 3MD Weight Loss Program

The so-called 3MD diet has been gaining popularity over the past couple of years. This diet is also known as the 90 Day Separation Diet. It is based on two 90 day diet periods. The main benefits of this diet should be; clear, easy-to-follow rules and proven results (weight loss between 40 and 55 lbs). Among the other results that the 3MD diet promises are a lower sensitivity to climate and positive changes in metabolism.

While many people find these claims easy to believe, there really aren’t any in-depth explanations in medical or physical terms for how this diet is supposed to work. Also, after this 3MD diet is over, the weight gain is coming back. Switching from the 3MD diet to our previous nutritional patterns makes people gain weight again. The success of the 3MD diet is based on the following assumptions:

– We are all subject to daily nutritional cycles (it does not explain what it is).

– We need the right combination of food – following exact rules defined for each day (protein day, carbohydrate day, starch day, fruit day) and every 29 days there is so-called “water day” or fasting day.

By following these two assumptions you should lose weight regardless of how many calories you consume daily. The menus prescribed by the inventors of the 3MD diet are rather strict “2 oranges”, “3 pieces of cake”, “smallest chicken”, “dinner is ½ of lunch”,… but without mentioning what kind of cake, how much how big a piece should be, what parts of chicken, how much “carb” lunch, nothing about the caloric value of the foods you should be eating.

Many additional rules accompany this diet. There are indeed some healthy tips among them: how you should use olive oil, restriction in salt, advice to consult a doctor. Exercise, which is the cornerstone of any serious diet in the world, deserved only an obscure mention, not even close to what one should be doing to actually lose weight. This sad fact makes the 3MD diet even more popular among overweight people. Those people get trapped in a stalemate of repetitive weight gain after completing this diet. Furthermore, this diet offers no explanation of the principles of its effectiveness.

Why is it so important to separate foods according to specific days and separate nutrients?

How exactly will this make us lose fat?

The daily separation cycle according to 3MD consists of a strict diet from 20:00 to noon the next day. In this period it is only allowed to eat fruit and drink water. This doesn’t make any sense. Those 16 hours represent 2/3 of the entire day. And you shouldn’t starve your body 16 hours a day. Any body that undergoes such a period of daily fasting becomes more sensitive to the buildup of energy from every bite we take. The messages that our body sends to our brain are to reduce energy consumption and take advantage of the lack of energy by draining the energy stored in the muscles. We force our body to start dissolving our muscle mass. It’s not good news.

Muscles, when in motion, are the body’s primary energy (fat) burners. So we are effectively sapping the only “tool” that can help us get rid of fat.

3MD provides no explanation as to why we should eat carbohydrates one day and protein the next. The problem is that “fruit” day and “starch” day are also “carb” days. The sugar in fruit and the complex sugar in starch are just two different types of the same thing: carbohydrates. While we may somewhat understand fruit day (healthy sugar), it’s hard to make sense of separating “starch” day and “carbs” day (complex and refined sugars). And there is a rule that you can take wholemeal bread together with chicken, which contradicts any healthy weight loss program (you shouldn’t mix protein (chicken) with carbohydrates (bread)).

The 3MD diet works in the short term. But weight loss is a consequence of the water that our body loses with this diet. 3MD is extremely popular as it doesn’t prohibit eating calorie bombs like chocolate. The other short-term positive effect of this diet is that it somewhat regulates your daily eating habits. People are forcibly disciplined. This makes it much easier to fall back into old eating patterns as soon as 90 days have passed.
