How Many Calories Are in Medifast?
I often write about my experiences with this diet over the past year, so I sometimes get asked questions about how it works. Yesterday, someone asked “How many calories are you allowed to eat per day on the Medifast diet?” I will answer this question in the next article.
First, an overview of Medifast and how it works: Before I get into the caloric stuff, I need to explain how the plan works. You eat six times a day. Those five meals are pretty much set because you choose and eat the five meals the company provides you. These are basically pre-made. You need to connect them. Many options are available including popular shakes and bars, eggs, oatmeal, soups and stews, chili, pudding, cappuccino, hot chocolate, latte, fruit drinks, chips, etc. In total, more than 70 options are available.
But, once a day you make your own big, healthy meal called “lean and green.” The guidelines for this are that you eat 5 – 7 ounces of lean meat or protein and 3 servings of vegetables. Obviously, the foods you choose will affect your daily calorie intake. The guidelines confirm that “lean and green” is healthy, but there will be some variation in caloric content depending on the foods you choose.
Daily Calories in Medifast Diet: For the most part, a typical day on Medifast is around 1,000 calories. Let’s take a quick look at the calorie content of a typical day’s meals. Below is a chart to show you what I mean.
Meal 1 Oatmeal 100
Meal 2 Cappuccino 100
Meal 3 Chili 110
Meal 4 Chocolate Shake 90
Meal 5 Protein Bar 110
510 total (about 500 calories left for your lean and green meals)
As you can see, most foods are similar in terms of how much they contribute to your daily total. Because protein bars are a little high in carbs, they ask that you only eat two a day.
Protein also counts with this diet: As you can see, the amount of calories is very low. But, another important part of this diet is that it is very low in carbohydrates and high in protein. This combination helps keep your body in ketosis because it doesn’t have excess carbohydrates to burn. So, instead of carbohydrates, your body starts burning its own fat. That’s why I believe people see pretty quick and dramatic results on this diet.
