Can You Skip the Lean and Green Meal on Medifast?

I get a lot of questions about medifast’s “lean and green meal.” If you’re not familiar with this, it’s the largest meal you prepare each day while on this diet. You can eat five prepackaged meals a day that you just have to put together. But the “lean and green” requires some food preparation. However, you can make this very easy too. The only real requirement is that you have 5 – 7 ounces of lean protein and three servings of vegetables. You can do it any way you want.

However, people often write to me and ask if they can just skip the lean green meal or if they can just eat a prepackaged meal instead. In other words, they would eat six “medifast meals” and forgo the lean, green ones. I will tell you what I think about this practice in the following article.

Why most people consider skipping their Lean And Green: I find that the vast majority of people want to omit it because they think it will allow them to lose weight faster. Approximately each prepackaged meal is about 100 calories each. Of course, very few home-cooked meals meet these criteria, whether they are “lean” or not. So, if you’ve eaten your 5 ready meals, you only have 500 calories for the entire day. People decide they don’t want to ruin their hard work by eating a bigger meal. I understand this way of thinking, but I know for a fact that it is flawed because I have extensively experimented with cutting it and it has backfired.

Why I think you should NOT skip it: My experience: Here’s what most people don’t understand. The calories for this main meal are already built into the plan. This diet is designed to consume approximately 1,200 calories per day. This is a low amount acceptable by most standards. Having 500 calories before this gives you plenty of wiggle room with your main meal. Even if you take liberties, you’ll often still be in the 1200-1300 range unless you follow the guidelines.

Understand that ketosis requires regular meals: Medifast works because ketosis works. Since you’re eating a low amount of calories and a high amount of protein, your body is somehow forced to burn fat rather than carbohydrates. But you’ll slow this process down if you don’t give your body the fuel it needs to do its job. If you look The biggest loser, you know Jillian takes it out on contestants when they don’t eat enough. So, don’t cheat yourself. You don’t really need it. I truly believe that if you eat regularly within reason, you will get better results.
