How to "Trick" Your Body into Losing Weight

How do you lose weight? Well, the simple weight loss arithmetic is simple to begin with. The bottom line is that if you have fewer calories than you expend, then you should be losing weight. And for the most part the casual dieter can follow this logic and will usually come out of losing weight. However, what most people don’t realize is that your body is smarter than you are. Here’s how to trick him…..

  1. Eat more– Yes, you heard me right. When most dieters think is that to lose weight they don’t need to eat so many calories.

    True story A few years ago, I was feeling frustrated because it seemed like no matter what I did, I couldn’t lose weight fast enough. Rather than just quit, I decided I needed some professional advice. I went to a personal trainer (who also happened to play for the Packers for a season) and he had me write down everything I ate for a week. The following week I went back and he gave it a quick look. He looked me straight in the eye and said, “Leo, you’re not eating enough.” I was speechless. Here I was doing my best to reduce foods to depravity. I was trying to lose weight. My body thought I was going to starve and actually slowed down my metabolism, thus killing my diet. Of course, he didn’t mean that I could eat more of the junk I was eating. It meant I could eat more good stuff….you know, veggies high in fiber and lean protein.

  2. Eat more often– Again, the conventional wisdom is that if you cut out the “snacks” between meals, you’ll lose weight. However, did you know that eating 6-8 mini meals will not only help you lose weight but burn more calories in the process? Here’s the real deal. Most of us don’t understand the actual work our bodies need to digest food. Yes, that’s right, every time you eat something, you’re making your body do a little work…and that little work will result in more calories burned than if you weren’t eating. It’s called the thermic effect and it accounts for 5-10% of calories burned in a day. Eating more often also works wonders for keeping those binges at bay. The reason “grazing” works is because it keeps your blood sugar on an even keel, and the more stable your blood sugar, the less likely you’ll be reaching for that bag of fritos for your mid-day snack. Of course, you have to understand that for it to really work, you have to be very careful about what you’re eating. After all, if your 6-8 meals a day include Big Macs and milkshakes, then you’re really shooting yourself in the foot. Foods high in protein and fiber tend to be very good because they cause a feeling of fullness while not being high in calories.

  3. Choose negative calorie foods for your diet– Most dieters know that there are certain foods that you can eat as much as you like. Most highly effective diets focus on these foods. Vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus and eggplant and fruits such as blueberries and apples are among these negative calorie foods.

    On a side notea friend of mine who just had a baby was trying to let it go baby weight and was looking for direction. I tried to convince her that there were things she could eat as much as she wanted. These were the foods I was referring to. These negative calorie foods are great because they are high in fiber and full of antioxidants. Also, if you were to add something like a handful of nuts or some form of lean protein like egg or chicken or fish, it will be enough to satisfy even the pickiest carnivore. Oh, and my friend? She lost all of her baby weight in about 2 months.

That’s pretty much it. The trick to a successful diet is to trick your body into thinking that all is well and that you are not starving. Most dieters think that if they starve they will lose weight. And it works in the short term. But your body will eventually start to think you’re starving and will slow your metabolism (and thus kill your diet) to a crawl. If you’re starving into thinking you’re days away from fitting into that dress you wore five years ago, you’re most likely going to get frustrated and abandon your diet.

However, by eating often and more importantly, eating the right foods, you can trick your body into burning more calories while eating than you want.
