Daily Calorie Allowance – Why One Size DOESN’T Fit All

Why are some things – like wool hats and pantyhose (tights) often labeled ONE SIZE? Not all of us have the same shape of head or the same length of legs. By definition, one size does not fit all. And our daily calorie limits are no different.

Some things aren’t the same: A Great Dane isn’t the same size as a Yorkshire Terrier, but they’re both dogs. We wouldn’t feed them the same amount, nor would we expect them to travel the same distance. However we accept that an official daily caloric allowance applies to all of us, single digits for adult men and women.

It now appears that these daily calories are set to increase by a sixth. That means the official limits for men would increase from 2,500 to 2,900 calories a day and for women from 2,000 to 2,320 calories a day. The calories we burn while walking, breathing and sleeping have apparently been underreported, according to a draft report from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition. People all over the world are getting fat. In Great Britain 23% of the population is obese and in the United States 31%. And more than half are overweight. Increasing our daily calorie limits will only give us an excuse to scoff more and then, as we weigh more, end up doing less activity to burn off all those calories. And that’s before we consider the many health issues associated with being too fat.

By the way, did you know that being overweight increases the risk of serious complications (even death) if we get sick?

But people aren’t all the same size either, so why should we all eat the same amount? We think of our caloric intake as a set of balance scales: on the one hand there is the food we eat and on the other there is the energy we consume in everyday life. If they are in balance our weight remains the same. Tip the scales with that extra candy bar and our weight can go up. Aim the other way by exercising more and our weight starts to drop.

If you’re a petite lady with an office job, it doesn’t take long to realize that you won’t need as much food as a muscular sportsman. A young man who loves to strut on the dance floor will expend more energy than a frail elder. And muscle burns calories much faster than body fat – there’s an incentive to keep active!

Miss Piggy once said “never eat more than you can lift” and cartoonist Bernard Kliban titled one of his drawings “never eat anything bigger than your head”. And, rather joylessly, model Kate Moss says “nothing tastes as good as thin skin.”

Good advice – I think! If we pay attention to portion sizes and stop eating when we’re full (not always easy), we should notice that our jeans fit better.
