Low Carb Diet Plans – Atkins vs South Beach Diet
While both the Atkins and South Beach diets can be considered low-carb diet plans and have some similarities to each other, it’s the differences between them that will help you decide which of these low-carb diets is for you.
Both plans start with a more rigorous two-week lead-in period than the rest of the diet. This two-week period is designed to make rapid weight loss highly motivating, but it will also wean you off many of the bad carbs you’ve become accustomed to eating. Many dieters can lose 7 to 14 pounds during these two weeks. Weight loss will generally slow down a bit after this, but you can still expect to lose between 2-5 pounds per week depending on your metabolism, how much weight you need to lose, and how strictly you follow the plan you choose.
Even during these first two weeks, Atkins and South Beach differ quite a bit from each other. Atkins eliminates virtually all complex carbohydrates, but does not limit fat consumption at all. Then you can eat butter, oils and fried foods like bacon and eggs. South Beach, however, limits most saturated fats, so you’ll skip the butter and dark meat in your turkey.
Count the grams of carbohydrates
Atkins followers count every single carbohydrate that enters their mouth after discounting the number of grams of fiber. South Beach dieters, on the other hand, don’t have to count carbs, and there are no restrictions on non-starchy vegetables. Instead of counting carbs, you should just keep track of portions: how many and how big. It also allows for good complex carbohydrates like whole grains and doesn’t allow for just white, refined starches. Atkins eliminates virtually all types of starch.
Which diet is easier to follow?
For most people, I’d say the South Beach Diet will also be the easiest diet to stick to in the long run. Atkins might seem like a great plan since you can eat all kinds of meat, butter, and fatty foods, but most dieters will eventually find its complex carbohydrate restrictions terribly punishing. Plus, this is definitely more heart-friendly based on what we know about saturated fat these days.
