Can You Cheat on Medifast and Still Lose Weight?

I am often asked how much cheating is allowed on Medifast or if you will still lose weight if you cheat. Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by cheating. Because technically, I’ve always cheated on my diet. However, I think there is a safe and effective way to do this, which I will discuss in the following article.

Understanding How Medifast Really Works: The reason this diet is so effective is actually threefold. First, you’re simply eating fewer calories than you normally would, as foods are low in calories and carbohydrates. Second, you’re eating six small meals throughout the day that help boost your metabolism and fight hunger. Finally, as you eat fewer carbohydrates and more protein, your body enters a metabolic state called ketosis which encourages your body to burn its own fat.

Ketosis truly is this diet’s promised land and where you ultimately want to be. You can test this using ketone strips, which tell you definitively if you’ve reached this state. (You can buy them at most any drugstore or super center.)

Cheating The Medifast Diet Gets You Out Of Ketosis?: You will stop losing weight so quickly and dramatically if you get out of ketosis. However, the good news is that it only takes a few days to re-enter. So, there’s really no need to panic if you notice from the ketone strips that you’re out. And you are much more likely to get out of this state if you cheat by eating carbohydrates. You’ll be much fitter if you cheat on protein. So technically, it’s better to sneak in a nice juicy burger than sneak in a donut or slice of pie.

The trick that I think actually helped me lose weight with Medifast: OK, so now I have to admit that I don’t always stick to things as planned. But I’m smart about it. I add things to my prepackaged foods several times a day. What I mean by that is, I add fat-free, sugar-free syrups to smoothies, puddings, and cappuccinos. Sometimes I also add fat-free whipped cream. I also add nonfat cheese, sour cream, and chili humus to eggs and soups/stews. I also sometimes add soda water to smoothies for a fizzy fountain-like drink. I use dry pudding ingredients to make “safe” muffins, cakes, and cookies.

In short, I take a lot of liberties with foods, but when I do, I try to use fat-free or sugar-free ingredients. This gives me more variety and makes me more enthusiastic about eating the foods.

The liberties I take with the Lean Green Meal: Each day, you will eat five prepackaged meals on this diet and prepare one yourself. (Some people will skip this meal, but you shouldn’t because I believe doing so will slow your metabolism. I’ve experienced this and it has almost always slowed my results.) You should be eating lean protein and low glycemic vegetables, and for the most part I I stick to this. But if my family is having chopped steak, sometimes I just won’t make the chicken breast just for myself. Or, if my family has sugar peas, I won’t deny them because they have a high glycemic index. And, every once in a while, I don’t deny myself a hamburger if I take away the bread.

I figure if I’m basically eating a “lean and mostly green meal,” I’m doing pretty well. And even with the little mistakes, I’m still getting WAY fewer calories and carbs than normal. And, if my weight loss is any indication, I’m fine.
