Type 2 Diabetes – What Are The Challenges Diabetics Face With Weight Loss?

Many people with type 2 diabetes are on a path that leads to weight gain, higher blood sugar levels, needing to take more medications, and an increased chance of diabetic complications. But think about it, you can turn the tide. Weight can come down…slowly and surely. Blood sugar levels can also drop, as can the doses of medications you’re taking. Many symptoms, such as those present in neuropathy, can improve… as can heart disease.

Type 2 diabetes is very similar to various other diseases in that it is caused by genetics and the environment in which you live your life. While genetics cannot be changed, your lifestyle can be changed.

Weight loss: Keep in mind that just a 5-10% loss of body weight can help you manage your blood sugar levels. But someone with type 2 diabetes who needs to lose weight has a number of challenges ahead, and the more you understand those challenges, the more power you’ll have in achieving your weight loss goal. These challenges include:

1. Fluctuating Insulin And Sugar Levels: This is especially challenging for people with type 2 diabetes…especially those with “belly fat.” This fluctuation produces a “yo-yo” effect as your blood sugar drops and you feel hungry. So if you eat too many carbohydrates to raise your blood sugar, you gain weight. This leads to cravings, binge eating and binge eating.

2. Postprandial Hyperglycemia: This is an increase in blood sugar levels after a meal, possibly due to eating too many high glycemic index foods. So you become sleepy leading to a lowering of thermogenesis which means that the normal body function which generates both heat and energy is not being utilized by physical energy… hence you gain weight.

3. Carbohydrate Addiction: When your blood sugars are out of balance, a diabetic will crave junk food like sweets and starchy foods. Carbohydrate addiction is a major obstacle to weight loss.

4. Food Allergies And Sensitivities: It is not unusual to find that overweight or obese diabetics are allergic to dairy and wheat products. Gluten sensitivity is also another problem. Gluten is found in barley, oats, rye and wheat.
