Top 3 Reasons Why Carbs Are NOT Bad!
Carbohydrates aren’t bad! I feel like the warmer months get closer to us, the further away the carbs are… because people start running away from them.
This is not only a miserable mindset, but it’s also not healthy. Yes, it’s actually not healthy to eliminate all carbohydrates from your diet. With that said, let’s look at the top 3 reasons why it’s actually beneficial to have carbs as part of your diet!
1) Your metabolism will love you.
Yes, yes it will! Think about your life as a whole and the things that aren’t necessarily great for you, but could also be harmful in the long run if you cut them out completely. Let’s use germs as an example and the fact that while they’re disgusting, our bodies wouldn’t be able to build an immunity to anything without them at some point. There have been studies done which have shown over time that children playing in the dirt etc. they had better immune systems as adults than children who were shielded from anything germy during their younger years.
Now think about carbs… while you may THINK they’re bad (because you’ve been lied to), they’re actually becoming bad for you because you’re cutting them out. Any person who cuts carbs to lose weight faster will eventually GAIN weight once she gets back to “normal eating” and may even gain more than she was meant to lose in the first place!
Cutting carbohydrates from your diet will cause your metabolism not to recognize them easily and therefore forget how to process them efficiently. What does this mean? Meaning these excess carbohydrates will rest as stored body fat. The solution? Never Eat Carbohydrates Again… Wrong! The solution is to educate yourself on how to eat carbohydrates in the correct and healthiest way so that they can benefit you and definitely not harm you.
2) You need energy!
Count how many times you have heard people on low or no carb diets complaining of being tired, lethargic etc… now count how many times you have heard people energized and full of energy, all because of their amazing low carb lifestyle. carbohydrates. .. Exactly. Know this: the proteins you eat can be used for energy, but they are mainly there to maintain your body, help you build muscle, recover from exercise etc… the healthy fats you eat are used to fight fat bad you eat and are also used as low-intensity energy, like when you sleep. This brings us to carbohydrates and what they provide.
Carbohydrates are used for energy at moderate to higher intensities which, depending on your daily activity level, can be most of the day…they are also there to signal your body important things like “your training is done, so stop tearing yourself down muscle” or “hey I’m here, so use me for energy instead of your proteins… they need to build and recover your body”. These things are important and in many cases they occur through insulin levels, on which carbohydrates have a lot of influence depending on what type they are.
To eliminate this opportunity for carbohydrates is to think that you can “fool” your body into thinking that it is simply wrong. I had more clients when I came to me at less pre-diabetic and just paying more attention to the types of carbohydrates they are eating and when… this condition has been entirely relieved for them, and that wasn’t even the initial goal to achieve!
Are you eating the correct amount for your goals? Seek advice from a professional to know the best dietary choices to make for yourself.
3) It makes sense (for your body)!
Think about the vehicles we drive. I’m sure for a pretty decent amount of time cars can run on low or even no fluids, but would you do it intentionally just because someone told you your gas mileage might increase as a result? No, you wouldn’t. People cut carbs because they are desperate to lose weight fast and someone tells them this is the way to get it. Not only is cutting carbs a miserable process, it is NOT a healthy process.
I have a client who is a doctor and one day he had an interesting story that he “just had to share”. A woman comes to the emergency room with internal complications, particularly with her intestinal tract. After further tests, scans etc. the problem was found… and it was basically a blockage inside her stomach. The cause? Upon further questioning it was determined that she was cutting carbs on a certain ketogenic diet to put her body into ketosis and “lose fat fast.” After a situation like this, the person then needs to be reintroduced to carbohydrates so that her body can relearn how to use/process them and begin the journey back to normal and eventually health. This happens because cutting carbs just doesn’t make sense for your body, especially over a long period of time.
The moral of the story is this: It’s never wise or even fun for that matter to completely eliminate anything from your diet, especially an entire food group! Sounds like a great idea thanks to the great marketing and bad information, but folks…you need to educate yourself! This is a problem, and if you’re not careful, the weight loss success you celebrate today could be your most difficult health problem you’ve encountered in your tomorrows to come.
Please ask questions about carbohydrates and what they can do for you, and if you need a path forward, then a custom nutrition layout could be your ticket, at least to get you headed in the right direction! The main thing to remember is that no matter the goal, this is your life and the conditions you place in your body must be not only healthy, but maintainable as well! Work out and eat smarter…start today, ask questions, get yourself on the right track and go eat some oatmeal…maybe even put some sugar in your starbucks yoca-java- malta-fight-calafriggin-mochachino!
