Body Building Myths That Must Die!

Every culture has its own myths and there is no exception to bodybuilding. Like most legends, most are nine parts fantasy and one part truth, although of course some legends have no truth in them at all. I have spent most of my career trying to debunk myths surrounding bodybuilding and related topics such as drugs, nutrition and supplements etc.

For example, one of the most popular articles I published “back in the day” on Muscle Media was titled “Nutrition Myths That Won’t Die” which focused on the myths surrounding protein and athletes. . Classics like “athletes don’t need extra protein” and “high protein foods are bad for you” and others have been covered up and dismissed.

This article, however, is not about a theme or myth, but rather a random myth that floats around and never seems to die. It’s meant to be tongue in cheek, but it’s still a strong effort to combat various myths that have little or no truth behind them. Some of these myths are generated within the bodybuilding community and some are propagated outside the community, by the general public or the medical community. These are in no particular order, so let’s start with the classics:

Myth #1: “Your muscle will turn to fat as soon as you stop working out – Tissue Alchemy BS”

This is a common tactic used by those who find excuses for why they didn’t start an exercise program and hate those who did. My own mother told me this when I was young when I joined the gym at 14. There is no physical mechanism that allows muscle to turn into fat when you stop working out for any reason. What happens, however, is that many of the muscle gains will be lost due to lack of stimulation. It’s not good news that people who don’t exercise and eat more than maintenance calories get fat. Therefore, it is common to lose muscle mass and increase body fat due to lack of exercise with excess calories. The next time you see someone who was ripped but is now fat, it’s not because their muscles have turned into fat. They are fat for the same reason millions are fat: too many calories, not enough activity.

Anyway, what if it’s true? That said, is the fear of this mysterious muscle for fat conversion the reason not to start a weight training program? If you stop brushing your teeth, the result is a cavity (drum roll), but this is not a legitimate reason not to start brushing your teeth at all! I have gained muscle and lost many pounds throughout my life, and have worked with countless people at all stages of their lives, and I have yet to see muscle turn into fat, this myth needs to die. the alchemy of tissue now. However, I have seen many people who stopped working out and became fat.

Myth #2: “Pros eat ‘clean’ all year round”

This myth can be blamed mainly on bodybuilding publications that want their readers to think that their heroes eat a healthy, low-fat “clean” diet year after year. This often results in new breeds trying to get all the calories they need to grow from chicken, rice and vegetables. Of course, it’s impossible to get – say – 4000 plus calories (or more) from such a diet. This fact often makes the newbie anxious and depressed because he is not getting much benefit from trying to kill himself with a low calorie diet. It is very difficult to get 4000, 5000, or 6000 calories a day from chicken and rice. Now for the facts: off-season I sat across the table from the pros eating cheeseburgers, pizza and applesauce. I know a pro who pulled out every time he saw Taco Bell. Adults need a lot of calories and high calorie foods are the only way to get them. As the great Dan Duchaine once said about eating improperly for growth: “Don’t be sad you ate a cheeseburger, be sad you didn’t eat three!”

Now I can’t comment on the diet of all the pros because I don’t know them all, and I’m sure some of them have a cleaner diet than others in the season. However, make no mistake: the articles you read about what the pros eat in season and what they actually eat are often two different things.

As an added myth, most pros will carry more body fat than they say in the offseason when trying to gain new muscle. Telling people that they eat at Taco Bell and are over a certain body fat level doesn’t sell magazines or supplements, so it’s worth keeping the myth as tough as nails. they are all year round (with a few cases) and always eat “clean”. .

Myth #3: “Bodybuilders are not strong”

Only people who have never been to a gym make such silly claims. Strength varies greatly from person to person of course, but some bodybuilders are very strong with 800lb squats and the unusual 500lb bench press. I’ve seen people use weights that have to be believed: front squats with 600lbs for reps, incline bench presses with 500lbs for reps, and bench presses with 400lbs for reps, etc. No, not all bodybuilders are nearly as strong, but every bodybuilder worth their salt is still stronger than the average person. Some bodybuilders compete in both powerlifting and bodybuilding and often do well in both. Yes, some bodybuilders are not as strong as they look, but some are stronger than they look, and some are insanely strong.

Myth #4: “Bodybuilders Can’t Fight”

I wouldn’t give much credence to this myth except to say that bodybuilders are like everyone else: some are tough SOBs and some are cream puffs with most somewhere in the middle. No different from the common people. I saw a few of the tough SOB types at the event. On the contrary, I was at a gym sponsored a few years ago where this bodybuilder decided to give this guy half his size a hard time. The problem is, this guy happens to be a state boxing champion and proceeds to beat the snot out of a bodybuilder in front of a few hundred people. The lesson here is: don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t fight!

Myth #5: “All Bodybuilders Are Tents”

As with the last legend, this one doesn’t give too much space. My experience is that the bodybuilding community is gay as often as the general public. No more, no less, and the amount of muscle a person has doesn’t seem to affect the ratio of anything. A silly myth that needs to be put to rest.

Myth #6: “Anyone can look like a pro bodybuilder if they take enough drugs”

If this were true, people in gyms all over the world would look like bodybuilders. The main difference between a high level bodybuilder and everyone else is their genetics, the one thing they have no control over. Yes, drug use is a reality in bodybuilding and many other sports, and yes, diet and training play a role; but if you don’t have the genes, all the steroids in the world won’t make you look like the people you see in the newspaper. Unfortunately, every gym has people who use higher dosages than many pros and still look like sh*%. Make no mistake: the drugs work and add clear benefits to the athletes who use them, but the difference between them and you is that you chose the right parents!

Myth #7: “All bodybuilders are narcissistic”

Well, this one has the truth about it. In fact, bodybuilders are known to be some of the ugliest people you’ll ever meet, but that’s not all. Some are humble, down to earth people, but let’s be honest, some narcissism goes hand in hand with bodybuilding. Nuff said there…

Myth #8: “Bodybuilders have small penises and try to make up for it with big muscles”

How many times have we heard this dumb myth? Obviously, this is for male bodybuilders. In fact, I have not seen that many rockets of the muscles of the body, but I see that it is the same for all men in this department. Some are big, some are small, and most are in the middle or “normal”. One caveat, however, is that a large man with a normal penis will be smaller than a thin man with a normal penis. It’s all in proportion.

Myth #9: “Steroids Don’t Work”

If you believe you’re crazy, you’re dirty. That legend needs no answer from me! There are many myths related to steroids that I could list, but this is not a steroid article, so I won’t bother.

Myth #10: “I don’t want to put on weight because I don’t want to put on too much”

This one is usually said by women, but I hear men say it sometimes too. It’s sad not to exercise. As mentioned above, very few people have the genes to achieve even more than normal muscle mass, let alone “big”. 99.9% of people reading this will be lucky to put on some muscle, and even then it will take years. It’s not like anyone woke up one day with unexpected muscle cramps. And if you are one of those rare people who put on muscle easily? Lucky you!

Yes, you have it; the great legend of bodybuilding (hopefully) has been debunked. These are the ones I see / hear most often. If you think one is wrong, feel free to let me know and maybe I can add it to this post at some point. I don’t want to see anyone turn away from the great endeavor that is bodybuilding. Like any sport or lifestyle, bodybuilding has its dark side. However, bodybuilding can be a healthy, productive and fun lifestyle that offers great benefits, so don’t avoid it because of myths and prejudices.
