Eat to Lose Weight – Why Starvation Diets Never Work
Asking your body to work without food is like asking your car to keep going as soon as the speedometer says “empty”. It just won’t happen. Your car needs fuel in the form of gasoline to run properly; Your body needs fuel in the form of calories to function properly as well. Giving your body the right fuel will allow it to function properly and not only better health, but slow and steady weight loss that is sustainable and realistic. Starvation doesn’t work for weight loss because starvation throws everything in the body out of balance, including metabolism.
Metabolism is the rate at which your body uses the fuel it receives for energy. Simply put, metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories. Almost everything you eat or drink contains calories. Calories are the unit used to measure the amount of energy needed to convert and use food into energy. If you eat more calories than your body needs to maintain its system and circulate, you will store what is left in fat cells; you will gain weight.
If you burn too many calories and don’t replace them, your body will look for energy from other sources which may include your lean muscles. Although you want to burn fat for energy, you don’t want to damage muscle in the process. Losing weight then becomes a delicate balancing act of learning what calories to eat each day.
Starvation is not a normal state for your body. In order to survive, the body will sense that it is in danger and will begin to shut down its metabolism – not burning fuel for energy. What will happen is simple: the body will retain every calorie it receives, and when you eat, your body will retain. If you slow down or stop your metabolism for a long time, you may have a hard time getting it started again.
If your body is busy storing all the new calories it takes in, the cells still need energy, but from a different source. Again, muscle tissue is at risk of being burned for fuel. Think about it: You buy a house, and fill one room with nice furniture and one with firewood. When winter comes, you are cold, but you don’t want to buy more firewood and burn your furniture. It doesn’t make sense, does it? The same goes for killing hunger. You have beautiful, strong muscles that keep you active and active, but you’re also trying to lose weight. Therefore, instead of feeding your muscles and moving more, you starve yourself, and just like at home with fuel and furniture, you burn what you need to save, and keep what you need to burn.
Now we all know that’s wrong, so…
No more famine!!
