Have you ever sought advice from an “expert” only to hear another expert say everything the first one said was wrong? I see it every day! The confusion is enough to make many people give up.
I recently watched a TV show about an overweight person who worked with trainers, nutritionists, doctors and other professionals to lose weight. He had lost over 100 pounds, but felt like he had reached a sticking point! Her doctor suggested she meet a fitness “guru” from NY. This expert came in and challenged everything that was being done and strongly advised him to avoid weight training to avoid getting ‘bulky’!
He debunks the old and discredited myths that lifting weights will make you look like a bodybuilder and that you should only do cardio to lose weight. Because he was famous as a teacher and pushed the idea of ’enrichment’ a lot, this created a difficult situation. Should he maintain weight training as recommended by his current trainer to help him lose 100 pounds of body fat without losing weight or should he follow the advice of his new teacher and drop it and stick to the exercises? really for the heart?
A very difficult decision – torn between experts. What does the ‘people tent’ do?
You may be dealing with this situation right now or you may know someone who is. Even if you only have a couple of pounds to lose, you may still be afraid of gaining weight because of the fear of ‘too much’. I’m here to tell you, after over 20 years of personal training I can assure you that ‘suffering’ will not be an issue. Weight training builds muscle yes, but genetics determine the ability to build body building muscle – not exercise. A very small percentage of people have the genetics to build body building muscle, so don’t be afraid of weight training, use it and lose fat and build body building muscle!
Focus on a consistent, quality exercise program and stick to it! I believe in you, you can do it!
