Long Term Green Tea Consumption and Body Fat
Many people find that they gain weight as they get older. This seems to be the reality of many of us; as we get older we gain a few pounds. It’s no secret that our metabolism begins to slow down as we age; although only 30 years old. However, there seems to be a simple secret weapon that can keep the pounds from piling on as we age.
It’s no secret that Asian countries have higher rates of overweight and obesity than most other parts of the world. And, despite getting older, Asians don’t seem to put on the age-related pounds that plague many cultures. And of course, it’s no secret that Asians drink a lot of green tea.
And, these two facts seem to be related. Green tea is said to have many health benefits, including preventing disease and weight gain. Consuming green tea has been shown to reduce the risk of many types of cancer, lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. Green tea has also been shown to help regulate insulin, which may help prevent or control diabetes.
Other studies have shown that green tea can help with weight loss, as it seems to speed up metabolism and promote weight loss. Green tea appears to have a unique ability to promote thermogenesis, or fat burning.
For these reasons, it seems that being a lifelong green tea drinker may mean you have less chance of putting on a few pounds each year as you get older. In addition to the abundant anecdotal evidence available comparing obesity statistics in Asian countries with those of European and North American countries, there is little research to support the theory that drinking green tea regularly for many years leads to low weight and small body fat.
A particularly interesting study on this topic was conducted by the Department of Family Medicine, National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Taiwan. This study looked at more than 1,200 subjects, both male and female. They compared the participants’ tea drinking habits and estimated body fat percentage and fat distribution based on waist fat. Waist-to-waist ratio is important because we know that fat carried around the waist and hips is more likely to lead to heart disease than fat carried elsewhere in the body.
The study concluded that tea drinkers had a lower percentage of body fat, and were more likely to have healthy waist fat. In fact, participants who drank tea for more than 10 years showed an average of 19% less body fat and 2.1% less waist circumference than non-tea drinkers. But even the participants who drank the tea for only six months showed statistically significant improvement over the participants who did not drink the tea.
This study identified several factors that appear to have a positive or negative effect on body fat percentage and body fat distribution. The factors they provided are as follows:
Smoking – Smoking is associated with higher body fat and waist-to-hip ratio.
Age – Older age is associated with higher body fat and waist-to-hip ratio.
Body Mass Index – A higher body mass index is associated with higher body fat and a higher waist ratio.
Pre/post menopausal – Pre-menopausal women may have a lower body fat percentage and lower waist-to-hip ratio than post-menopausal women.
Regular tea drinkers – Regular tea drinkers have a lower waist circumference and a lower body fat percentage.
Physical activity – Those who exercised regularly had lower body fat and lower waist circumference.
So, as you can see, there are many factors in life that affect whether or not you gain weight as you age. Of course, age itself is beyond our control, just like going through menopause. However, what we can learn from this study is that regular exercise, quitting smoking and drinking tea regularly throughout your life can help you prevent the growth of weight as you get older.
Adding green tea to your diet is a simple way to help protect your health and prevent weight gain. As more and more research has shown the health benefits of green tea, it has become easier to see. Today, green tea is available in loose or bagged forms for home brewing and bottled for those who prefer iced green tea. Even these popular coffee houses offer green tea options in your menu.
And, if you’re not getting enough of green tea’s benefits by drinking it, there are green tea supplements on the market that deliver green tea’s anti-oxidants in pill form. But, no matter how you choose to get your green tea dose, make sure you get it!
