Trekking to Lose Weight
When I think of all the people I’ve met over the past 7 years, I can’t remember one person who said they did a walk to lose weight. Some people may not feel comfortable admitting this, but I think that, in general, weight loss is not a big reason for people to go hiking. But really, why not on earth? Many of my friends are almost obsessed with losing weight and keeping in shape. I think it’s a matter of attitude. Or maybe it’s not as fashionable to go for a walk in the woods as it is to go to a state-of-the-art gym for an hour or two every now and then. God knows… But the truth is that walking is one of the best ways to lose weight! Don’t believe me? Read on.
When you work out in the gym, do aerobics or vigorous exercise, you can expect to burn 4-800 calories per hour. Compare that to travel and you’ll see that travel is at the bottom of that range. During a walk, the “typical hiker” burns 4-500 calories per hour. So why is walking good for weight loss?
The two main reasons are:
1. When you travel, you do it all day. You burn calories from morning to night, not during two hours in the gym.
2. On a long trip away from the temptations of everyday life, the cookie jar, junk food restaurants etc.
Let’s look at the math.
Suppose you are like me, male, 30 years old, about 160 pounds / 72 kg.
1. You go hiking and carry an extra 15-20 pounds (7-10 kg) in your backpack. You are going on a good trip that is a bit difficult, but still fun. You walk 8 hours a day, burning 500 calories an hour. That is, you burn 4000 calories. You may burn another 1,500 calories during the rest of the day.
TOTAL WATER CALORIES: 5500 CALORIES / DAY
2. You exercise or exercise vigorously, for an average of one hour a day. This will burn 800 calories. In addition, you live a normal life, with moderate activity, going to school, office or light physical work, shopping, housework etc. Therefore, your body will burn approximately 2700 calories per day.
TOTAL WATER CALORIES: 3500 CALORIES / DAY

If you go for a long walk, you will burn 2000 more calories per day, compared to doing vigorous exercise! Well, at least in this example. The exact figure is up to you. If you are heavier, carry heavier loads, travel further, in more difficult places etc., you will burn more calories. If you are smaller and slower, the fire will slow down. But these numbers are very common.
It’s true that you eat more while walking. But most of the extra calories burned usually come from burning your body fat. Hiking is a sustained activity, so it’s easier for the body to burn your body fat at a slow but steady pace.
And besides being important for weight loss, hiking brings you in close contact with amazing natural places as well as with your body. I don’t walk because I want to lose weight. I do it for fun and the feeling it gives me whenever I have a few days off or a few weeks. And even though I’m not overweight, I always come back thinner and, for some reason, with a new and better outlook on life!
