Rudolph Diesel Would Have Been Scared Silly
In Britain, I think it’s fair to say that we generally enjoy complaining about things.
I drive a Mercedes Vito with a 3.0 Diesel engine, and I’m used to it costing around £75 to fill up straight away. It wasn’t easy, but at least it wasn’t the same. With fuel prices rising, I once spent £102 to fill up the tank and I remember thinking it couldn’t get any worse. This morning I filled up again and noticed that the average was £1.05 a litre. To cheer me up even more, they even offered a free Cadbury’s Twirl with every coffee (which I declined for nutritional reasons) and I paid the £77 feeling not too ripped off.
My joy was short-lived when I noticed that unleaded petrol was only £0.89 a litre. That’s 16p a liter or 72p a gallon! That’s a significant price difference, and it’s no wonder diesel sales are suffering right now. You have to drive a lot to justify the savings, as many modern petrol engines are very economical. Assuming your Diesel car gets 50mpg, that would be 471 miles for £45 worth of fuel at £1.05 per litre. The same amount of petrol at £0.89 a litre, in a car that averages 40mpg will get you 445 miles. With a typical Diesel car costing at least £500 more than a used petrol engine model to buy, you need to drive more than 20,000 miles a year before you see any reasonable savings.
Rudolph Diesel first demonstrated the engine that immortalized his name at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900. His engine was unique in that it used the heat from compressed air to ignite fuel, which was injected through the end of compression. beat. At the time, it was more efficient than the steam engine, and even ran on peanut oil, the modern version of which is Bio Diesel. It took until 1936 before a Diesel engine was fitted to a production car, and the Mercedes 260D, despite a top speed of around 55mph, is one of the biggest cars ever made.
Unfortunately, Rudolph Diesel never got to see or drive his revolutionary engine. On September 29, 1913, on his way to a conference in London on the ship “Dresden”, he disappeared overboard shortly after dinner and was never seen again. His body was found a few days later by a Dutch ship’s crew, and his son identified him with personal possessions he found on him.
The huge torque and weight of these early engines meant they were more suitable for use in boats, tractors, trains and buses than in cars, but as technology advanced, then the engine improved a lot and by the mid 1980s, diesel cars were very good. common in ordinary cars (and of course, Taxi). The executive and luxury car market, however, stuck to the smoother, quieter and more powerful petrol engine. Just 25 years ago, the idea of a noisy, smoky old diesel engine in an executive car was almost unheard of.
A smoky, noisy Diesel engine didn’t fit the image of a ‘luxury car’ and as a result, most had 6 or 8 cylinder petrol engines (or V12 in the case of Jaguar). Most of them struggled to get better than 20mpg (or 12mpg if you’ve got an old Range Rover or V12 Jag), but they’re fine for quiet, high-speed cruising. Economics was not a big deal and the term ‘carbon footprint’ only existed in the English language in relation to children stepping on barbecue ashes and walking on cream carpets!
The development of powerful and efficient turbocharged and intercooled engines has made Diesel power a viable alternative to large gasoline engines. The W210 Merecedes Benz E300 TD of 1995 was one of the first really outstanding executive cars, which was better than the same model with the 3.0 petrol. I once drove a 1998 E300TD from Stuttgart to Calais in one day, averaging nearly 40mpg despite a 130 MPH Autobahn range. I knew then that Diesel power was the future for executive cars, and since then they’ve improved a lot compared to the last BMW 530 Diesel, so the Mercedes crop looks good.
Some of the best executive cars and SUVs today are powered by Diesel engines and some are simply amazing. The 4.0 TDi fitted to the Audi A8 is an absolute monster, as is the 5.0 TDi fitted to the Volkswagen Phaeton and Touareg. BMW has the 535 Diesel which isn’t far behind the M5’s V10 petrol in terms of performance, but can get around 40mpg in the race. The most impressive thing is that the Le Mans 24 hours race in 2008 was won by a Diesel-powered Audi R10 with a 5.5-liter V12 Turbo Diesel engine. After completing 381 laps it was still going strong and I will never forget the noise it made as it went around the track. As I camped in a muddy field about 100 yards from Arnage’s corner, I was woken up most of the night by something awful!
I can’t help but wonder what Mr. Diesel would have thought about the performance of the patented engine design, and what he would have feared if he was spinning fast behind the wheel of an Audi A8 4.0 TDi. I’m sure heaven would laugh at him when he saw someone fill up with unleaded gasoline and it didn’t work! Although unleaded may only cost 89p per litre, the damage it causes to today’s standard Diesel injection systems can cost thousands! However, it keeps the damaged service (and us) busy emptying tanks and changing filters.
