The current generation is the first generation in US history not expected to outlive their parents. The main reason: obesity. Doctors are concerned about childhood obesity because it can lead to life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and sleep apnea. Unfortunately, social isolation and discrimination can also be a result of obesity in children. Although obesity can be linked to genetic makeup, there are important behaviors under our control that can reduce the risk of gaining excess weight. So what can parents do to protect their children from the dangers of obesity?
Limit television, Internet, and video game entertainment. What is the magic number? Two hours a day or less.
You rarely give your child sugary sweets or fatty foods. You should not let your child eat sweets or soda every day. Once a week or twice a month our children get sweet food. And, as a result, they don’t want them or chase us. Healthy snacks include bananas, carrots, fresh figs, grapes, and other fruits. Fruit juice also contains a lot of sugar. Mix the water with 1/6 organic juice. This will keep your child hydrated, keep the calories low, and give them a little taste and vitamin C. Of course, it is better if you can drink the fruit.
Make them move! It doesn’t have to involve expensive gymnastics classes, structured swimming lessons, or an overly regimented lifestyle. Remember when you were little? A friend of mine who worked at a four star restaurant came into work one day with the flu. When I asked him why he would come in and prepare food, he said he wouldn’t get paid and might even get fired for not having a busy weekend. But when it comes to obesity, portion control is the main reason to eat at home. Today’s dish in a typical American restaurant is yesterday’s dish that fed an entire family.
Hide the vegetables. With children, especially babies and toddlers, you can include vegetables in their diet by making their meals fun. For example, you can make a salad in the shape of a cartoon, or a plate of whole grains in the shape of a clown with berries placed. Make a list of their favorite foods and think of creative ways you can make them healthier.
With education and collective effort, we can reverse the dire predictions about the longevity of our youngest and help them become the healthiest generation ever. It is our duty to protect our children.
